History of IONIS Education Group
How the Group Started
Marc Sellam created the first school in Paris in 1980. It was a business school called the Institut supérieur européen de gestion group. It had a different way of teaching compared to other big French schools. In the 1980s, new colleges opened in cities like Bordeaux, Toulouse, and Lyon. In 1993, another business school was founded. It offered three years of education after high school.
Growing with New Schools
In 1997, the group, then called Intelsup, bought a computer science college named École pour l'informatique et les techniques avancées. In 1997 and 1998, they also bought the Institut supérieur de gestion business school. They also added an engineering college for planes and space, the Institut polytechnique des sciences avancées.
In 1999, the group started the École pour l'informatique et les nouvelles technologies. This school focused on practical computer science. In 2001, they opened E-Artsup, a college for digital design and multimedia. The name IONIS Education Group was chosen in 2002. By then, all their colleges offered five-year courses.
Expanding into New Fields
In 2003, IONIS entered the biotechnology field with the Institut Sup'Biotech de Paris. They bought ICS Bégué, an accountancy college from 1957, in 2004. In 2006, they acquired the École spéciale de mécanique et électricité, an engineering college founded in 1905.
Between 2007 and 2008, more colleges opened in cities like Lille, Lyon, and Marseille. In 2009, the group launched IONIS Executive Learning and the IONIS School of Technology and Management. By 2010, the ISEG schools became three separate schools for finance, marketing, and business. In 2011, Sup'Internet, a college focused on the Internet, opened its doors.
Recent Developments and Future Plans
In February 2013, the group shared its plans for the next ten years. These plans focused on growing internationally and offering more social services. They also wanted to connect different study areas and add more types of programs.
In September 2013, EPITECH opened a new campus in Beijing. In September 2014, this university also opened new campuses in California, the United Kingdom, and Spain. Also in 2014, ESME Sudria opened a campus in Beijing. They also started a new Master of Science course with the Beijing Institute of Petrochemical Technology.
Since September 2013, the École des technologies numériques appliquées started a new two-year program after high school. This program was completely free. Students who graduated from this program would help pay for new students. For people without a high school diploma, a new campus of the Web@cademie opened in Lyon in September 2013.
In February 2014, a new business school opened. It was called Moda Domani Institute and specialized in luxury, fashion, and design. In September 2014, a new digital campus opened in Paris. It brought together several schools like the Institut supérieur européen de gestion group and Sup'Internet.
In 2020, the group bought the computer science school Supinfo. In 2021, IONIS opened the artificial intelligence College IA Institut. Also in 2023, EPITA and Chang’An University started a new joint Bachelor’s program in Artificial Intelligence. This four-year program gives students a Bachelor’s degree in Artificial Intelligence. The first group of students began classes in September 2023. They attend courses at the Chang’An University campus in Xi’an, with some classes taught by professors from EPITA.
