A minor-planet moon is a space object that orbits a minor planet. It is like a natural satellite for a smaller body in space. As of January 2022, scientists have found or suspect that there are 457 minor planets with moons.

Finding these moons is very important. By studying how a moon orbits its minor planet, scientists can figure out how heavy and dense the minor planet is. This helps us learn more about what these space objects are made of.

Some of these moons are almost as big as their main planet. For example, the moons of 90 Antiope, Mors–Somnus, and Sila–Nunam are about 95% the size of their main bodies. The biggest known minor-planet moon is Charon. It orbits Pluto and is about half its size.

In 1977, an amateur astronomer named Paul D. Maley thought he saw a moon around the asteroid 6 Hebe. This was during an occultation, when the asteroid passed in front of a bright star. Even though it wasn't fully confirmed, it was the first time someone officially reported a possible asteroid moon.

Scientists have also found rings around some distant objects. Examples include the rings of Chariklo and Chiron.

What We Call Them

Besides "satellite" or "moon," we sometimes use other words. A minor planet with one moon can be called a "binary" or binary minor planet. If it has two moons, it's a "triple" system.

The larger object is usually called the primary. Its companion is the secondary. When the asteroid and its moon are about the same size, we might call them a "double asteroid." The Minor Planet Center (MPC) calls these "binary companions." A good example of a true binary is the 90 Antiope system, found in 2000. Very small satellites are sometimes called moonlets.

How They Were Found

Before the Hubble Space Telescope and space probes, scientists looked for asteroid moons from Earth. For instance, in 1978, some thought they saw a moon around 532 Herculina. But later, the Hubble Telescope showed no moon. So, Herculina likely doesn't have a big moon.

Also in 1978, Charon, Pluto's largest moon, was discovered. At that time, Pluto was still considered a major planet.

The first confirmed asteroid moon was found in 1993. The Galileo spacecraft saw the small moon Dactyl orbiting 243 Ida in the asteroid belt. The second was found around 45 Eugenia in 1998. In 2001, 617 Patroclus and its similar-sized moon Menoetius became the first known binary asteroids in the Jupiter trojans. The first binary object beyond Neptune (after Pluto–Charon) was 1998 WW31, seen in 2002.

Systems with Many Moons

In 2005, scientists found that the asteroid 87 Sylvia had two moons. This made it the first known triple system (or trinary minor planet). Later, a second moon was found orbiting 45 Eugenia. Also in 2005, the dwarf planet Haumea was found to have two moons. This made it the second object beyond Neptune (after Pluto) with more than one moon.

Since then, more triple minor planets have been discovered. About one new one is found each year. Recently, two moons were found orbiting the large near-earth asteroid 3122 Florence. This brings the total number of known triple systems in our Solar System to 16, including the Pluto system.

The table below lists moons of systems with three or more bodies. It starts with Charon, found in 1978. The most moons found around one minor planet are five for Pluto (a six-body system) and three for 130 Elektra (a four-body system).

How Common Are Moons?

We are still learning how many minor planets have moons. It depends on how far they are from Earth, their size, and how bright they are.

About 2% of asteroids are thought to have moons. For trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs), about 11% are thought to have one or more moons. Most large TNOs have at least one moon. This includes all four dwarf planets listed by the IAU (International Astronomical Union).

More than 50 binary systems are known in each main group: near-Earth asteroids, belt asteroids, and trans-Neptunian objects.

Two binary systems have been found among centaurs. These are objects with orbits between Jupiter and Neptune. Both are double ring systems around 2060 Chiron and 10199 Chariklo. They were found in 1993–2011 and 2013.

How Moons Form

Scientists are not completely sure how minor-planet moons form. There are a few ideas.

One popular idea is that a moon forms from pieces that break off the main planet after a collision. Another idea is that a small object gets caught by the gravity of a larger one.

For moons formed by a collision, their spin and distance from the main body are important. Moons that orbit very close, like Pluto and Charon, fit this idea. But distant moons of similar size probably didn't form this way.

The distance between a minor planet and its moon can vary a lot. For asteroids, it can be from a few hundred kilometers (like 243 Ida and 3749 Balam) to over 3,000 km (like 379 Huenna). For TNOs, the distances can be from 3,000 to 50,000 km.

Types of Moons and Where They Are

What a "typical" binary system looks like depends on where it is in the Solar System. This is likely because they form differently and last for different amounts of time in different areas.

  • Near-Earth asteroids: Their moons usually orbit about 3–7 times the primary's radius away. These moons are also two to several times smaller than the main asteroid. Since these asteroids often pass close to planets, scientists think that the planets' gravity might help create these moons. Collisions are also thought to play a part.
  • Main-belt asteroids: The moons here are usually much smaller than the main asteroid. A special exception is 90 Antiope. These moons orbit about 10 times the primary's radius away. Many of these binary systems are part of asteroid families. This means the moon and the main asteroid likely came from a larger body that broke apart after a collision.
Eight TNO moonorbits
The eight largest TNOs with moons (Pluto, Haumea, Makemake, Eris, Quaoar, Gonggong, Orcus and Salacia), with the Earth to scale. Gonggong is written as its temporary name, 2007 OR10.
  • Trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs): It's common for the two orbiting objects to be similar in size. Their orbits are also much larger, about 100 to 1,000 times the primary's radius. Many of these binary systems are thought to have formed very early in the Solar System's history.
    • Pluto has five known moons. Its biggest moon, Charon, is more than half the size of Pluto. It's so big that it orbits a point outside Pluto's surface. Both Pluto and Charon orbit a shared center point. This makes them a binary system, sometimes called a double dwarf planet. Pluto's other four moons, Nix, Hydra, Kerberos, and Styx, are much smaller. They orbit the Pluto–Charon system.
    • Haumea has two moons. Their sizes are about 155 km for Hiʻiaka and 85 km for Namaka.
    • Makemake has one known moon, S/2015 (136472) 1. It is thought to be about 100 miles (160 km) across.
    • 47171 Lempo is a special triple system beyond Neptune. Lempo and its moon, Hiisi, are almost the same size and orbit close together (about 867 km apart). A second moon, Paha, orbits the Lempo–Hiisi pair from about 7,411 km away.
    • Eris has one known moon, Dysnomia. Its size is estimated to be between 150 and 350 km.
