What is the National Register of Historic Places?

The National Register of Historic Places is like a special list of places in the United States that are really important to our country's history. When a building or area is added to this list, it means it has a unique story to tell. It could be a place where important events happened, or a building that shows how people lived a long time ago. Being on this list helps make sure these places are kept safe for future generations to learn from and enjoy.

Company Stores: A Look Back in Time

Many of the historic places in McDowell County are old company stores. Imagine a time when coal mining was the main job in many towns. Coal companies often built entire towns for their workers, including homes, schools, and even stores. These "company stores" were usually the only place in town where miners and their families could buy food, clothes, and other things they needed.

Life in these coal towns was very different from today. Miners were often paid in "scrip," which was like special money that could only be used at the company store. This meant they had to buy everything from the company that also employed them. These stores were often big and important buildings in the community.
