Pat Barry (born July 7, 1979) is an American former professional mixed martial artist and kickboxer. He competed as a heavyweight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). Barry is well-known for his powerful low kicks.

He started practicing Sanda while in college. He won many titles both in the U.S. and internationally. In 2005, he joined K-1, a major kickboxing organization, where he fought for two years.

In 2008, Pat Barry began his career in mixed martial arts (MMA). He won his first three fights by knockout. He then signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) and competed there for five years. He retired from MMA in late 2013 and went back to kickboxing in 2014, joining Glory. Pat Barry is also the fiancé and training partner of former UFC Women's Strawweight Champion Rose Namajunas.

About Pat Barry

Pat Barry was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. His father was an American military veteran, and his mother was African-American. His parents opened schools around the world, so Pat lived in Bogota, Colombia, until he was six years old. After his father passed away from cancer, Pat moved back to New Orleans with his mother, older sister, and younger brother.

Even though he didn't start martial arts training until he was 21, Pat loved ninjas and Street Fighter video games. He also enjoyed Jean-Claude Van Damme movies and watched K-1 kickboxing when he was young. Pat has said his three heroes are his mother, boxer Mike Tyson, and Sagat from Street Fighter. Before becoming a professional fighter, he worked as a pizza delivery person.

Pat Barry's Fighting Journey

Starting with Sanshou (2002–2005)

Pat Barry began training professionally in Wushu, sanshou, and Kickboxing at age 21. He was studying sociology at the University of New Orleans when he joined Russell Jones's Kickboxing Gym. He had his first professional fight on November 2, 2002. He won the Sanda Kungfu Federation (SKF) United States Heavyweight Championship by knockout. After that, he trained full-time with Master Shawn Liu in New Orleans.

In June 2003, Pat won a spot on the US National Sanshou team. He also became the SKF World Heavyweight Champion by knocking out Paul Gurevidius. In November 2003, he won a silver medal at the 2003 World Wushu Championships in Macau. He visited China many times between 2002 and 2008. During this time, he had over fifty amateur fights and trained at the Shaolin Temple.

In December 2004, he won the K. Superstar Championship. A month later, he won the Kings of Kickboxing tournament.

Fighting in K-1 (2005–2007)

Pat Barry joined K-1, a top kickboxing organization, in 2005. He made his debut against Scott Lighty, losing by a close decision. In June 2005, he met American kickboxer Duke Roufus. They became close friends after Pat lost his home in Hurricane Katrina. This tragedy also took the life of his grandmother.

After moving to Roufus' gym, Pat won his first K-1 fight in August 2005. He knocked out Mark Selbee in the first round. He later fought Aleksandr Pitchkounov to a draw in Japan. They had a rematch in 2006, which Pat lost.

Pat then moved to Amsterdam to train with Ernesto Hoost, a four-time K-1 champion. He defeated Scott Lighty again in December 2006. In April 2007, Pat entered a K-1 tournament in Hawaii. He won his first fight against Gary Goodridge when the referee stopped the match due to a cut. He then lost to Aleksandr Pitchkounov in the semifinals.

In August 2007, Pat competed in another K-1 tournament in Las Vegas. He knocked out Rickard Nordstrand in the first round. He then lost to Zabit Samedov in the semifinals. In his last K-1 fight in December 2007, he lost to Freddy Kemayo due to a broken nose.

Moving to Mixed Martial Arts (2008)

In 2008, Pat Barry returned to train with Duke Roufus. He also competed in the World Combat League, a team kickboxing event. He had a record of 3 wins and 1 loss in this league.

He made his mixed martial arts (MMA) debut on May 30, 2008. He won by TKO (technical knockout) in the first round. He then won his next two MMA fights by knockout. In his third fight, he won the Combat USA Heavyweight title. Soon after, he signed a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).
