Pat Barry, born on July 7, 1979, is an American former professional fighter. He competed in two main sports: mixed martial arts (MMA) and kickboxing. In both sports, he fought in the heavyweight division, which is for the biggest athletes. He was especially known for his powerful low kicks.

Barry started learning Sanda, a type of Chinese kickboxing, while he was in college. He won many awards in Sanda, both in the U.S. and internationally. Later, in 2005, he joined K-1, a famous kickboxing organization, and fought there for two years.

In 2008, Pat Barry began his career in MMA. He won his first three fights by knockout, which means he finished the fight by making his opponent unable to continue. He then signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), one of the biggest MMA organizations. He competed in the UFC for five years as a Heavyweight. He retired from MMA in late 2013 and went back to kickboxing in 2014, joining another big organization called Glory. Pat Barry is also the fiancé and training partner of Rose Namajunas, who is a former UFC Women's Strawweight Champion.

Pat Barry's Early Life

Pat Barry was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. His father was an American military veteran, and his mother was African-American. His parents opened schools around the world, so Pat lived in Bogota, Colombia, until he was six years old. After his father passed away from cancer, Pat moved back to New Orleans with his mother, older sister, and younger brother.

Even though he didn't start training in martial arts until he was 21, Pat loved martial arts from a young age. He was a big fan of ninjas, the Street Fighter video games, and movies starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. He also enjoyed watching K-1 kickboxing fights. Pat has said that his three heroes are his mother, the famous boxer Mike Tyson, and Sagat, a character from the Street Fighter video games. Before becoming a professional fighter, he worked as a pizza delivery person.

Pat Barry's Fighting Career

Starting in Sanshou (2002–2005)

Pat Barry began his professional training in Wushu, sanshou, and Kickboxing when he was 21. He was studying sociology at the University of New Orleans at the time. His first professional fight was on November 2, 2002, in Las Vegas, Nevada. He won the Sanda Kungfu Federation (SKF) United States Heavyweight Championship by knocking out Robert Parham in the fourth round. After this, he trained full-time with Master Shawn Liu in New Orleans.

In June 2003, Barry fought twice at an event in Atlanta, Georgia. He earned a spot on the US National Sanshou team and won the SKF World Heavyweight Championship by knocking out Paul Gurevidius with a high kick. In November 2003, as part of the US National team, Barry competed at the 2003 World Wushu Championships in Macau. He won a silver medal in his weight division. He visited China many times between 2002 and 2008, having over fifty amateur fights and training with the Chinese National Sanshou team at the Shaolin Temple.

On December 18, 2004, he won the K. Superstar Championship in New Orleans. A month later, in Gulfport, Mississippi, he won the Kings of Kickboxing tournament.

Fighting in K-1 (2005–2007)

After trying out for K-1 in 2004, Barry joined the top kickboxing organization. His first K-1 fight was on April 30, 2005, where he lost for the first time in his career.

In June 2005, he met American kickboxing legend Duke Roufus. They became close friends, especially after Barry lost his home in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina and stayed with Roufus in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. After training with Roufus, Barry won his first K-1 fight on August 13, 2005, by knocking out Mark Selbee. Sadly, later that month, Hurricane Katrina also took the life of Barry's grandmother.

He had a draw with Russian fighter Aleksandr Pitchkounov in November 2005. They fought again in April 2006, and Pitchkounov won.

After this, Barry moved to Amsterdam to train with Ernesto Hoost, a four-time K-1 World Grand Prix Champion. Outside of K-1, he defeated Scott Lighty again in December 2006. Barry hurt Lighty with low kicks and then finished him with a high kick.

He returned to K-1 for a tournament in Hawaii on April 4, 2007. He defeated Gary Goodridge when the doctor stopped the fight due to a cut on Goodridge's face. Barry then faced Aleksandr Pitchkounov again in the semifinals and lost.

Barry competed in another K-1 tournament in Las Vegas on August 11, 2007. He knocked down Rickard Nordstrand with a high kick and then stopped him with low kicks. In the semifinals, he lost to Zabit Samedov.

In his last K-1 fight on December 15, 2007, Barry lost to Freddy Kemayo due to a broken nose from a knee strike.

Moving to Mixed Martial Arts (2008)

In 2008, Barry returned to train with Duke Roufus at Roufusport. He competed in the World Combat League, a team-based kickboxing competition, and had a record of 3 wins and 1 loss.

He made his debut in mixed martial arts on May 30, 2008, winning by TKO. He then knocked out John George with a high kick in his next fight. In his third MMA fight, Barry won the Combat USA Heavyweight title by stopping Simon Diouf with low kicks.

He then signed a contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

Fighting in the UFC (2008–2013)

Mirko Cro Cop vs Pat Barry UFC 115
Barry was defeated by Mirko Cro Cop in the co-main event of UFC 115 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in June 2010.

Pat Barry made his UFC debut on December 27, 2008, at UFC 92. He won by TKO against Dan Evensen by injuring his knee with strong low kicks.

His next fight was against Tim Hague on May 23, 2009. Barry was doing well with his strikes, but Hague took him to the ground and made him give up with a guillotine choke.

On October 24, 2009, he fought fellow kickboxer Antoni Hardonk. After taking some powerful kicks and punches in the first round, Barry found his rhythm in the second round. He landed fast jab combinations, hurting Hardonk several times before knocking him down and finishing the fight with punches. This win earned him "Knockout of the Night" and "Fight of the Night" awards.

Barry then fought Mirko Cro Cop on June 12, 2010, at UFC 115. Barry knocked down Cro Cop twice in the first round, but Cro Cop eventually won the fight by making Barry give up with a rear-naked choke in the third round. Barry broke his hand and foot in the fight.

His next fight was against Joey Beltran on January 22, 2011. Barry used effective leg kicks to slow down Beltran and won by a unanimous decision.

On June 26, 2011, Barry faced Cheick Kongo. Barry dropped and hurt Kongo early in the first round, but Kongo recovered and knocked Pat out with a punch. This was Barry's first knockout loss in his career.

Barry then fought Stefan Struve on October 1, 2011. Barry was winning the striking exchanges, but Struve took him down and made him give up with a triangle choke and armbar.

In 2011, Barry changed training camps. He faced Christian Morecraft on January 20, 2012. Despite an early submission attempt from Morecraft, Barry escaped and won the fight by knockout. This win earned him another "Fight of the Night" award.

On May 5, 2012, Barry lost to Lavar Johnson by TKO in the first round. After this, Barry moved to train under Trevor Wittman in Colorado.

Barry faced Shane del Rosario on December 15, 2012. After a close first round, Barry landed a big left hand and a series of punches, finishing with a strong right hook to win by knockout. This earned him another "Knockout of the Night" award.

He faced Shawn Jordan on June 15, 2013, and lost by TKO. His final UFC fight was on December 7, 2013, against Soa Palelei in Australia. Barry was knocked out by punches from Palelei.

Returning to Kickboxing (2014–2015)

On January 28, 2014, Pat Barry announced he was retiring from MMA. His manager said he would likely go back to kickboxing. The next month, Barry announced he had signed with Glory, a top kickboxing organization.

In his first kickboxing fight after returning, Barry defeated Ed Burris on March 22, 2014. He knocked Burris down with a body shot and then stopped him with punches in the second round.

He lost to Zack Mwekassa on May 3, 2014, being knocked out in the first round.

Barry was scheduled to fight Mirko Cro Cop again in June 2014, but he had to withdraw due to an injured hand.

He had his next fight in a different organization on January 16, 2015, against Demoreo Dennis. Barry landed heavy leg kicks and punches, winning the fight by decision.

Barry was expected to fight Mourad Bouzidi in April 2015, but he was forced out of the fight again due to an injured hand.
