History of Prince Sports
How Prince Sports Started
Prince Sports began in 1970. It was founded by Robert Hirt McClure. He lived in Princeton, New Jersey. This is where the company got its name. At first, Prince made machines that shot out tennis balls. Soon after, they started making rackets too.
A man named Howard Head joined the company. He was the founder of the Head sports company. Howard Head started taking tennis lessons after he retired. He used a Prince tennis ball machine. But he felt he was not getting better fast enough. So, he joined Prince in the early 1970s. He helped create Prince's famous oversized tennis racket.
Changing Owners
Over the years, different companies owned Prince. The Benetton Group from Italy owned it for a while. Then, Lincolnshire Management, Inc. bought Prince in 2003. Later, Nautic Partners LLC became the owner.
In 2012, Authentic Brands Group bought the Prince brand name. This happened after Prince Sports had some financial difficulties. Authentic Brands Group owns the rights to many famous names. These include Marilyn Monroe and Bob Marley.
By September 2012, the Waitt Company made a deal. They agreed to run the Prince brand for 40 years. Now, Prince Global Sports is part of Athletic Brands Holding Company. The Waitt Company owns most of this holding company. Other brands like Ektelon, Viking, and Battle are also part of it.
Moving to Atlanta
After its financial recovery, Prince announced a big move. In March 2014, they moved their main office. It moved from Bordentown, New Jersey, to Atlanta.
Mike Ballardie, the CEO of Prince, explained why. He said Atlanta has a great tennis community. More people play tennis there than in any other American city. This made Atlanta a perfect home for the company. Atlanta also has the world's largest city tennis league. It has over 80,000 members.
