The Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins Region is one of Chile's 15 main administrative areas. It is often called the O'Higgins Region for short. This region is named after Bernardo O'Higgins Riquelme, who was one of Chile's important founders.

The biggest city and capital of the region is Rancagua. Another important city is San Fernando.

History of the O'Higgins Region

In 1880, an older "O'Higgins Province" was created. It covered the same area as the Cachapoal Province today.

Later, in 1974, Chile created its modern regions. The old O'Higgins Province joined with the Colchagua Province. Together, they formed the new Region VI. Since then, it has been known as the Libertador General Bernardo O'Higgins Region.

Geography and Location

The O'Higgins Region is located in a key part of Chile. To its west, it touches the Pacific Ocean. To the east, it shares a border with Argentina.

To the north, it is next to the Valparaíso and Santiago Metropolitan Regions. To the south, it borders the Maule Region.

The main rivers flowing through this region are the Cachapoal River and the Tinguiririca River.

Population and Major Cities

As of 2015, about 918,751 people lived in the O'Higgins Region. This means there were about 56.1 people per square kilometer.

The largest city in the region is its capital, Rancagua. In 2002, about 206,971 people lived there. Other important cities include San Fernando with about 49,519 people and Rengo with about 30,891 people.

How the Region is Managed

The O’Higgins region is divided into three main areas called provinces. These are:

Each province has its own capital city. For example, Rancagua is the capital of Cachapoal Province. These provinces are further divided into smaller areas called comunas.
