Roger William Allam (born 26 October 1953) is a British actor. He has performed in many plays, movies, TV shows, and radio programs.
He is well-known for playing Inspector Javert in the original London musical Les Misérables. He was also First Officer Douglas Richardson in the radio series Cabin Pressure. On TV, he played DCI Fred Thursday in the series Endeavour. You might also know him as Illyrio Mopatis in the HBO series Game of Thrones, Royalton in Speed Racer, or Peter Mannion MP in The Thick Of It.
Roger Allam has been nominated six times for a Laurence Olivier Award, which is a very important award for theatre in the UK. He has won this award three times.

About Roger Allam's Life and Acting Career
Roger Allam was born in Bow, London, England. He went to Christ's Hospital school and Manchester University. His father was a church leader.
Early Theatre Roles
In 1983, he played Mercutio for the Royal Shakespeare Company. This is a famous theatre group.
From 1985 to 1986, he played Inspector Javert in the first London show of the musical Les Misérables. This was a very important role for him.
Radio and Stage Successes
Roger Allam has also been in many radio dramas for the BBC. In 2001, he played Valjean in a BBC Radio 4 version of Les Misérables.
In 2000, he played Adolf Hitler in a play called Albert Speer at the Royal National Theatre. He won an Olivier Award in 2001 for his role as Captain Terri Denis in a play called Privates on Parade.
In 2003, he played Willy Brandt, a former leader of West Germany, in the play Democracy. He also appeared as the bad guy Abanazar in the pantomime Aladdin at the Old Vic theatre in 2004 and 2005. He did this role again in 2006–07.
In 2005, Allam was in a play called Blackbird. This play later won an award for being the best new play.
Film and TV Appearances
In 2006, he was in the film The Queen, which starred Dame Helen Mirren. He played the Queen's private secretary.
From 2007 to 2012, he played Peter Mannion MP in the BBC comedy The Thick of It. This role made him very well-known on television.
In 2008, he played Max Reinhardt in the play Afterlife. In 2009, he played Albin/Zaza in La Cage aux Folles in London.
In 2010, Roger Allam played Falstaff in Henry IV, Part 1 and Henry IV, Part 2 at Shakespeare's Globe. He won another Olivier Award for Best Actor for these roles. In October 2010, he joined his old castmates from Les Misérables for a special 25th anniversary concert.
Detective Roles and Recent Work
In January 2012, he started playing Detective Inspector Fred Thursday in the TV series Endeavour. This show is a prequel to the popular Inspector Morse. He played a kind but tough mentor to young Endeavour Morse. This show was very popular and ran for many seasons, ending in 2023.
In April 2012, he also starred in the play Uncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov. In 2013, he played Prospero in William Shakespeare's play The Tempest at Shakespeare's Globe.
Roger Allam also worked with director Stephen Frears again in the film Tamara Drewe. He played Nicholas Hardiment, a crime novelist.
In October and November 2016, Allam appeared as Brigadier Adrian Stone in the BBC series The Missing.
Since January 2020, Allam has been in the BBC Radio 4 comedy drama series Conversations from a Long Marriage with Joanna Lumley. This show is still running.
In March 2022, Allam began playing Antoine Verlaque in Murder in Provence. This is a detective show based on books by ML Longworth. He also voices the demon Azazel in the 2022 Netflix show The Sandman.
