Roger William Allam (born 26 October 1953) is a British actor. He has acted in plays, movies, TV shows, and radio programs.
He is well-known for playing Inspector Javert in the first London show of the musical Les Misérables. He was also First Officer Douglas Richardson in the radio series Cabin Pressure. On TV, he played DCI Fred Thursday in Endeavour. You might also know him as Illyrio Mopatis in the HBO series Game of Thrones. He was Royalton in Speed Racer and Peter Mannion MP in The Thick Of It.
Roger Allam has been nominated six times for a Laurence Olivier Award. He has won this award three times. It is a very important award for theatre in the UK.

About Roger Allam
Roger Allam was born in Bow, London, England. He went to Christ's Hospital school and then to Manchester University. His father was a church leader at St Mary Woolnoth.
Early Acting Career
In 1983, he played Mercutio for the Royal Shakespeare Company. This is a famous theatre group.
From 1985 to 1986, he played Inspector Javert in the first London production of the musical Les Misérables. This was a very important role for him.
He has also acted in many radio dramas for the BBC. In 2001, he was the main character, Valjean, in BBC Radio 4's version of Les Misérables.
In 2001, he won an Olivier Award for Best Actor. This was for his role as Captain Terri Denis in a play called Privates on Parade. In 2002, he acted with Gillian Anderson in a play called What the Night Is For.
Later Roles and Awards
In 2003, Roger Allam played Willy Brandt in a play called Democracy. Willy Brandt was a leader of West Germany.
In 2004 and 2005, Allam played the bad guy Abanazar in the pantomime Aladdin. He acted with Ian McKellen in this show. He played this role again in 2006–07.
In 2006, he was in the movie The Queen. He played the Queen's private secretary. Dame Helen Mirren won an Oscar for her role in this film.
From 2007 to 2012, he played Peter Mannion MP in the BBC comedy The Thick of It. This role was very popular.
In 2009, Allam played Albin/Zaza in La Cage aux Folles in London.
In 2010, he played Falstaff in Henry IV, Part 1 and Henry IV, Part 2 at Shakespeare's Globe. He won another Olivier Award for Best Actor for these roles. In October 2010, he joined his old castmates from Les Misérables for a special concert.
Recent Work
Since 2012, Roger Allam has starred in the TV series Endeavour. He plays Detective Inspector Fred Thursday. He is a kind but tough mentor to young Endeavour Morse. This show is very popular in the UK and in America.
In 2013, he played Prospero in William Shakespeare's play The Tempest at Shakespeare's Globe.
He also worked with Stephen Frears again in the movie Tamara Drewe. He played Nicholas Hardiment, a writer.
In 2016, Allam was in the BBC series The Missing.
Since 2020, Allam has been in the BBC Radio 4 comedy drama Conversations from a Long Marriage. He stars with Joanna Lumley.
In 2022, Allam started playing Antoine Verlaque in Murder in Provence. This is a detective TV series. He also voices a demon named Azazel in the Netflix show The Sandman.
Personal Life
Roger Allam is married to actress Rebecca Saire. They have two sons, William and Thomas. William is also an actor. Rebecca and William even played mother and son in an episode of Endeavour in 2020.
