Samuel Nicoll Benjamin (born January 3, 1839 – died May 15, 1886) was a brave officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was honored with the Medal of Honor, one of the highest awards for military bravery.

Samuel Benjamin's Early Life

Samuel Benjamin was born in New York City on January 3, 1839. His parents were William Massena Benjamin and Sarah Jane Turk Benjamin.

He went to the United States Military Academy in West Point. This is a famous school where future military leaders are trained. He graduated in 1861.

A Soldier's Journey in the Civil War

Samuel Benjamin played an important role during the American Civil War. This war was fought in the United States from 1861 to 1865. He was part of the Union Army, which represented the northern states.

He fought in many major battles. These included the Battle of Blackburn's Ford and the First Battle of Bull Run. He also took part in the Peninsular Campaign and the Northern Virginia Campaign.

Other important battles he was involved in were the Maryland Campaign and the Battle of Fredericksburg. He also served in the Vicksburg Campaign and the East Tennessee Campaign. Later, he fought in the Overland Campaign, which included the intense Battle of the Wilderness and the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House.

After the Civil War ended, Samuel Benjamin continued his service. He worked at West Point and in the Adjutant General Corps. This corps helps manage the army's records and personnel.

Samuel Benjamin's Family

Samuel Benjamin was married to Julia Kean Fish. Julia's father was Hamilton Fish, a very important person in American history. He served as the Governor of New York, a U.S. Senator, and even the U.S. Secretary of State.

Samuel and Julia had four children:

  • William Massena Benjamin (1874–1928)
  • Hamilton Fish Benjamin (1877–1938)
  • Julian Arnold Benjamin (1877–1953)

Samuel Benjamin passed away on May 15, 1886. He was still serving in the military at the time. He is buried in the cemetery of Saint Phillip's church in Garrison, New York.
