History of South Holland
The area that is now South Holland, Illinois, was first settled in 1846. These early settlers were immigrants from the Netherlands. When the community officially became a village in 1894, about 1,000 people lived there.
South Holland started as a general farming community. Later, it became famous for growing vegetables, especially onion sets. By the 1940s, South Holland was known as the "Onion Set Capital of the World."
The town was built on low ground near the Calumet River. It was first called de Laage Prairie, which means "Low Prairie." This helped tell it apart from another Dutch settlement on higher ground, which is now the Roseland neighborhood of Chicago.
In October 2007, Forbes.com said South Holland was the "Most Livable Metro-Area suburb" in the Chicago metropolitan area. This means it was a great place to live near Chicago.
