Where is Stapleford?
Stapleford sits right on the edge of two counties: Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.
- To the north, you'll find Ilkeston.
- To the east is Beeston.
- If you go west, across the River Erewash, you'll reach Sandiacre.
- To the south, there's Toton.
A Quick Look at History
Stapleford has a long history, going back even before the Norman Conquest in 1066.
- The town's name first appeared in the Domesday Book in 1086. It means "ford marked by a post or posts."
- In the churchyard of St Helen's church, there's a special Stone Cross. It's from the Saxon times and is thought to be the oldest Christian monument in the Midlands.
- Stapleford grew because it was close to the River Trent and the River Erewash. This made it a good place for trade.
- In the late 1700s, the town expanded even more because of the stocking-making business. You can still see some of the original Stocking Knitters' Houses today.
- The main crossroads in Stapleford is called The Roach. This name comes from the time of the Napoleonic Wars. French prisoners were made to cut through rock to build roads, and they called this "La Roche."
The Hemlock Stone
Stapleford is also home to the Hemlock Stone on Stapleford Hill. This huge rock is about 200 million years old! It dates back to the Triassic Period.
Modern Times
- In 2006, a new NHS Health Centre opened. It has since been replaced by a larger healthcare center with a mental health unit and a cafe.
- A Sainsbury's local shop opened in 2007.
- Stapleford is also home to the Full Mash microbrewery, which makes its own beer.
Why is it Called "Stabbo"?
People sometimes call Stapleford "Stabbo." No one is quite sure where this nickname came from. It doesn't mean anything violent, even though it might sound like it. The local newspaper, Nottingham Post, thinks it might have started as "Stappo" (a shorter way to say Stapleford) and then changed to "Stabbo" over time.
