Starr Andrews, born on June 23, 2001, is an amazing American figure skater. She won a silver medal at the 2022 Skate Canada International. She also earned silver at the 2019 International Challenge Cup and the 2019 Egna Trophy. Starr finished fourth at the 2023 U.S. Nationals.
She has placed in the top ten at three big ISU Championships. Starr is also the first African American woman to win a medal at a Grand Prix event in singles skating. Earlier in her career, she won a junior silver medal at the 2017 U.S. national championships.

About Starr Andrews
Starr Andrews was born in Los Angeles, California. She learned at home through homeschooling. She has a brother and two sisters. Her sister Skylar is a gymnast, and her brother Ashton plays baseball.
Starr's Skating Journey
Starting on Ice
Starr became interested in figure skating when she was just three years old. Her mom took her to an ice rink. Starr really wanted to skate but was too small. She started learning to skate in 2005.
A video of Starr, at nine years old, skating to the song "Whip My Hair" became very popular. It appeared on YouTube in December 2010. By March 2018, it had been watched over 53 million times!
Derrick Delmore became her coach around 2013. Starr placed sixth at the 2016 U.S. Championships in the novice level.
Junior Success
For the 2016–17 season, Starr moved up to the junior level. She was coached by Derrick Delmore and Peter Kongkasem. She made her first international appearance at the Golden Bear of Zagreb in October 2016. There, she won the junior ladies' title.
In January, she earned the junior silver medal at the 2017 U.S. Championships. Starr then joined the U.S. team for the 2017 World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Taipei, Taiwan. She finished twelfth overall at this event.
Senior Debut and Grand Prix
Starr started her 2017–18 season in the junior category. She placed fifth at the ISU Junior Grand Prix in Austria. In December, she made her senior international debut. She placed sixth at the 2017 CS Golden Spin of Zagreb.
In January, Starr finished sixth in the senior ladies' category at the 2018 U.S. Championships. She was chosen to compete at the 2018 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, where she placed seventh.
In August 2018, Starr competed at the 2018 CS Asian Open Figure Skating Trophy. She placed second in the short program. In September, she ranked seventh overall at the 2018 CS Autumn Classic International.
Starr made her first Grand Prix appearance in October at the 2018 Skate America. She finished tenth overall. She also competed at the 2018 Skate Canada International, placing seventh.
Starr finished eighth at the 2019 U.S. Championships. After that, she won silver medals at both the 2019 International Challenge Cup and the 2019 Egna Spring Trophy.
For the 2019–20 season, Starr competed in the 2019-20 ISU Challenger Series. She placed fifth at both the 2019 CS Lombardia Trophy and the 2019 CS Finlandia Trophy. At the 2019 Internationaux de France, she placed fifth overall.
Starr finished sixth at the 2020 U.S. Championships. She ended the season by placing eighth at the 2020 World Junior Championships.
Recent Seasons
In the 2020–21 season, Starr competed at the 2020 Skate America and placed eighth. At the 2021 U.S. Championships, she finished twelfth.
For the 2021–22 season, Starr placed fifth at the 2021 CS Autumn Classic International. She finished tenth at the 2021 Skate America. She also placed fifth at the 2021 CS Cup of Austria. Starr had to withdraw from the 2021 Internationaux de France due to an injury.
Starr finished ninth at the 2022 U.S. Championships. This result led her to the 2022 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, where she also placed ninth. In the spring of 2022, she had surgery for a heart condition she had for many years.
Making History
Starr started her 2022–23 season by placing sixth at the 2022 CS Nebelhorn Trophy. At her first Grand Prix event, the 2022 Skate Canada International, she surprised many by winning the silver medal. She became the first African American woman to win a medal in singles skating during the Grand Prix era, which began in 1995.
Starr said this was a "huge deal" for her. She noted that there are not many people of color in the sport. Bringing home a medal made it even more special. At the 2022 NHK Trophy, she placed ninth.
At the 2023 U.S. Championships, Starr placed third in the short program. She finished fourth overall, earning a pewter medal. This was her first time on the senior podium at the U.S. Championships. She was the first African-American woman to stand on the U.S. podium since Debi Thomas in 1988. Starr said this was "amazing."
Starr's preparation for the 2023–24 season was delayed. She had another heart surgery for a condition she had for a decade. She started working on her programs in July. She finally debuted at the Kings Cup International in October, winning a silver medal.
At the 2023 Skate Canada International, she finished eighth. She then placed tenth at the 2023 Grand Prix of Espoo. Starr won a bronze medal at the 2023 CS Golden Spin of Zagreb in Croatia. At the 2024 U.S. Championships, she moved up to sixth place overall after a strong free skate.
For the 2024–25 season, Starr competed in the 2024–25 ISU Challenger Series. She finished fifth at the 2024 CS Cranberry Cup International and tenth at the 2024 CS Denis Ten Memorial Challenge. In November 2024, she won a silver medal at the Pacific Coast Sectional Figure Skating Championships. This qualified her for the U.S. Championships. She then won gold at the 2024 Santa Claus Cup.
At the 2025 U.S. Championships, Starr placed sixth overall. She finished her season with a fourth-place finish at the 2025 International Challenge Cup.
It was announced on July 14, 2025, that Starr Andrews was chosen to compete at the upcoming 2025 Skate America.
