Starr Andrews (born June 23, 2001) is an American figure skater. She is known for her amazing performances on the ice. Starr won a silver medal at the 2022 Skate Canada International and has placed in the top ten at several big international skating events. She made history as the first African American woman to win a medal in the singles category at an ISU Grand Prix competition.

Earlier in her career, Starr was also the junior silver medalist at the 2017 U.S. national championships.

About Starr's Life

Starr Andrews was born in Los Angeles, California, on June 23, 2001. She was taught at home, which is called homeschooling. She has a brother and two sisters. Her sister, Skylar, is a gymnast, and her brother, Ashton, plays baseball. Starr's mom, Toshawa Andrews, has a health condition that affects her heart.

Starr's Skating Journey

Starting Out

Starr became interested in figure skating when she was just three years old. Her mom took her to the ice rink, and Starr really wanted to try it! She started learning to skate in 2005.

When she was nine, a video of her skating to the song "Whip My Hair" became super popular online. It was posted on YouTube in December 2010 and had over 53 million views by 2018!

Around 2013, Derrick Delmore became her coach. Starr placed 6th in the novice (beginner) level at the 2016 U.S. Figure Skating Championships.

Junior Level Success

For the 2016–17 season, Starr moved up to the junior level. She made her international debut (first time competing outside the U.S.) and won the junior ladies title at the Golden Bear of Zagreb in October 2016.

In January, she earned the junior silver medal at the 2017 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She then joined the U.S. team for the 2017 World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Taiwan, where she finished twelfth overall.

Senior Level Debut

Starr started her 2017–18 season on the junior level, placing fifth at a competition in Austria. In December, she competed as a senior for the first time internationally at the 2017 CS Golden Spin of Zagreb, where she placed sixth.

In January, Starr finished sixth in the senior ladies' category at the 2018 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. She also competed at the 2018 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, finishing seventh.

After placing eighth at the 2019 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Starr went on to win silver medals at both the 2019 International Challenge Cup and the 2019 Egna Spring Trophy.

Continued Progress

Starr placed sixth at the 2020 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and eighth at the 2020 World Junior Figure Skating Championships.

Skating During the Pandemic

In the 2020–21 season, Starr competed at the 2020 Skate America, which was only for skaters training in the U.S. due to the coronavirus pandemic. She placed eighth.

At the 2021 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, she finished twelfth.

Overcoming Challenges

Starr finished ninth at both the 2022 U.S. Figure Skating Championships and the 2022 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships. After the season, she had surgery for a heart condition she had experienced for almost ten years.

Making History

The 2022–23 season was a big one for Starr! She started by placing sixth at the 2022 CS Nebelhorn Trophy. At her first Grand Prix event, the 2022 Skate Canada International, she surprised many by winning the silver medal!

This was a huge moment because she became the first African American woman to win a medal in singles skating during the Grand Prix era (which started in 1995). Starr shared how important this was to her, saying, "I am one of the few people of color in the sport, and to bring home a medal is even more special."

At the 2023 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, Starr earned the pewter medal, placing fourth. This was her first time on the senior podium at the U.S. Championships. She was also the first African-American woman to stand on the U.S. podium since Debi Thomas in 1988, which Starr called "amazing."
