The Sundacarpus amarus is a special kind of tree. It is the only species in its group, called a monotypic genus. This means it's the only tree of its kind in the Sundacarpus genus. It belongs to the Podocarpaceae family, which includes many types of conifer trees.

Scientists officially named Sundacarpus as its own genus in 1989. Before that, it was sometimes thought to be part of other tree groups like Podocarpus or Prumnopitys.

What is Sundacarpus Amarus?

Sundacarpus amarus is a large evergreen tree. This means it keeps its leaves green all year round. These trees can grow very tall, from 10 to 60 meters (about 33 to 197 feet) high. Their trunks can be quite wide, measuring from 12 to 140 centimeters (about 5 to 55 inches) across. The leaves of the Sundacarpus amarus are long and narrow, usually about 5 to 15 centimeters (2 to 6 inches) in length.

Where Does it Grow?

The Sundacarpus amarus tree is found in different parts of Australia and Malesia. Malesia is a region in Southeast Asia that includes many islands.

In Australia

In Australia, you can find this tree only in Queensland. It grows mostly on the Atherton Tableland and in nearby areas along the northeastern coast of Queensland.

In Other Countries

Sundacarpus amarus is quite common in New Guinea, New Britain, and New Ireland. In these places, it often grows in mountain forests alongside other trees like the southern beech (Nothofagus).

You can also find Sundacarpus amarus on several Indonesian islands. These include Buru, Halmahera, Morotai, Sulawesi, Lombok, Flores, Timor, Sumbawa, Java, and Sumatra. It also grows in the Sabah province on the island of Borneo. In the Philippines, these trees are found on the islands of Mindanao and Luzon.
