Timothy Peter Pigott-Smith (born May 13, 1946 – died April 7, 2017) was a famous English actor and author. He was known for his many roles in movies and TV shows. He also wrote books for children.

One of his most famous roles was Ronald Merrick in the TV show The Jewel in the Crown. He won a special award for this role in 1985. He also appeared in popular shows like Doctor Who, Midsomer Murders, and Downton Abbey. You might have seen him in movies such as Clash of the Titans, Johnny English, and V for Vendetta.

Early Life and Education

Tim Pigott-Smith was born in Rugby, England. His father, Harry Thomas Pigott-Smith, was a journalist.

Tim went to school at Wyggeston Boys' School and King Edward VI School. He later studied at Bristol University. He learned to be an actor at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.

On Screen: Film and Television

Tim Pigott-Smith had a long career. He started with smaller parts. His role in the BBC mini-series The Lost Boys helped him get bigger roles.

His breakthrough came in 1984. He played Ronald Merrick in The Jewel in the Crown. He also starred as Chief Constable John Stafford in The Chief.

He appeared in two Doctor Who stories: The Claws of Axos (1971) and The Masque of Mandragora (1976). He was also in Downton Abbey as Sir Philip Tapsell.

Tim was often the narrator for TV documentaries. He narrated The Team: A Season with McLaren, a series about car racing. He also narrated Battlefield, which looked at famous battles. Later, he narrated Monarchy: The Royal Family at Work, about the British Royal Family.

His movie roles included Alexander, Johnny English, and V for Vendetta. He played the Foreign Secretary in the James Bond film Quantum of Solace. His last film role was in Victoria & Abdul (2017).

On Stage and Radio

Tim Pigott-Smith also performed a lot in the theatre. He acted in plays by Shakespeare. He also performed in ancient Greek plays.

In 2011, he played the main character in King Lear in Leeds. He also played Charles, Prince of Wales in the play King Charles III. He was nominated for an award for this role. He later played Charles in the movie version too.

He was also a radio actor. He appeared in many shows on BBC Radio 4.

Writing Books

While filming The Jewel in the Crown in India, Tim wrote a diary. This diary was published in a book called Out of India.

He also wrote two children's books. These books were part of The Baker Street Mysteries series. They featured Sherlock Holmes' young helpers, the Baker Street Irregulars. The books were The Dragon Tattoo (2008) and Shadow of Evil (2009).

Later Life and Death

Tim Pigott-Smith passed away on April 7, 2017, at the age of 70. His death was due to natural causes. He was buried in Highgate Cemetery in London.

Awards and Recognition

Tim Pigott-Smith won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in 1985. This was for his role in The Jewel in the Crown.

He was also nominated for the Laurence Olivier Award and the Tony Award for his role in the play King Charles III. In 2017, he was given an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) honor for his contributions to drama.
