Tim Reynolds' Early Life
Tim Reynolds was born in Wiesbaden, Germany. His father was in the U.S. Army. His family moved around a lot. They lived in Germany, Indiana, Alaska, Kansas, and Missouri. He spent the longest time in Missouri. His parents were very religious. He grew up listening to Christian music. But his older sister had the Beatles albums. He loved their music right away. He would pretend to play guitar to their songs.
When Tim was a teenager, he learned guitar and bass. He played in his family's church choir. He also started adding rock and roll, funk, and soul music to his playing. He was about twelve years old then. After high school, he left the Midwest. His talent led him to meet Carter Beauford and Butch Taylor. They were future members of the Dave Matthews Band. They played together in a band called Secrets in Richmond, Virginia. Later, Tim moved to Charlottesville, Virginia. He found many people there who liked jazz, jazz fusion, and experimental music. Charlottesville was a great place for him to try new music styles. He added psychedelic rock to his music. Some of his early influences were Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, and Led Zeppelin.
By the 1990s, Tim formed his band, TR3. He added new influences like Nine Inch Nails, Bob Marley, and Marilyn Manson. He also kept learning new instruments. These included the sitar, sarod, mandello, keytar, and tubular bells. He learned other "exotic" instruments too. These were not common in Western rock music at the time.
Musical Partnerships
Playing with Dave Matthews
Tim Reynolds was playing music in Charlottesville in the late 1980s. His friend Nic Cappon told him to play at a bar called Miller's. There, he met the bartender, Dave Matthews. Tim explained that he played at Miller's all the time. He knew the other future band members before Dave. They had played together since 1981. Dave moved to town in 1987. When the Dave Matthews Band started in 1991, Tim already had his own band, TR3. He told Dave, "I like my band the way it is. You should start your own band." He felt Dave needed to do his own thing.
In 1993, Tim and Dave started playing acoustic shows together. They played Dave's songs with just acoustic guitars. Tim would also play some of his own songs. These shows became very popular. In 1996, Dave and Tim went on their first full tour as a duo. In 1999, they released a live album called Live at Luther College. This was released with a 40-show tour.
After a short break, Tim toured with Dave again in 2003. They also played as an opening act for the Dave Matthews & Friends tour. This was in late 2003 and early 2004. They played more shows together in 2006 and 2007. Tim joined Dave for a short tour in Europe in 2007. On August 14, 2007, they released a live CD/DVD. It was called Live at Radio City. It included songs like "Stay or Leave" and "Gravedigger". It also had two of Tim's songs: "You are My Sanity" and "Betrayal". The Radio City show was also released in high definition.
In 2008, Tim joined the Dave Matthews Band again. They recorded the album Big Whiskey and the GrooGrux King. This was Tim's first time recording with Dave since 2003. It was his first time with the full band since 1998.
Tim and Dave performed together several times in April 2008. They played to support presidential candidate Barack Obama. They also played at the "Seeds of Compassion" show in Seattle. They performed at Jack Johnson's Kokua Festival in Hawaii. Tim toured as lead guitarist with the Dave Matthews Band in 2008. He is still a full-time member of the band as of 2023.
Dave Matthews and Friends
Dave Matthews released his first solo album, Some Devil. After that, he gathered many musicians from the album. They went on a small tour in late 2003 and early 2004. The group included Trey Anastasio on guitar and Brady Blade on drums. Tony Hall played bass, and Ray Paczkowski played keys. Tim Reynolds played guitar. Each show started with an acoustic set by Dave and Tim. Then, the full band played with Tim on electric guitar. Most songs from Some Devil were played live. They also played many cover songs. One cover, "Solsbury Hill" by Peter Gabriel, was Tim's idea.
Dave Matthews & Friends played occasional shows in 2004, 2005, and 2006. In 2008, Tim joined the Dave Matthews Band for their summer tour. They also had an open policy for fans to record their shows. This policy also applies to TR3.
