U.S. Route 40 is a very long highway in the United States. It stretches from Park City, Utah all the way to Atlantic City, New Jersey. This road is about 2,286 miles long! It goes through twelve different states, connecting many towns and cities.

Years ago, U.S. Route 40 used to go even further west. It reached Reno, Nevada and San Francisco, California. However, that part of the route is now part of Interstate 80.

A big part of U.S. Route 40 in the east used to be known as the National Road. This historic section runs from Vandalia, Illinois to Cumberland, Maryland. The National Road has been around since 1839. Another part of U.S. Route 40 was also called the "Lincoln Highway."
