Vietnam first joined the Olympic Games in 1952. Back then, it was known as the State of Vietnam. After 1954, only South Vietnam sent athletes to the Summer Olympics. They competed in every Summer Games from 1956 until 1972.
After Vietnam became one country again in 1976, it started competing as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. They have been to every Olympics since 1980, except for 1984. The current Vietnam Olympic Committee was created in 1976. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially recognized it in 1979. Vietnam has never competed in the Winter Olympics.
Vietnam won its very first Olympic medal at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney. Trần Hiếu Ngân earned a silver medal in Taekwondo in the Women's -57 kg event. Vietnam then won its first gold medal at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Shooter Hoàng Xuân Vinh won gold in the Men's 10m air pistol event.
Vietnam usually sends about 12 athletes to each Olympic Games. This number was consistent until the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Some people in Vietnam used to think that the Olympics were not as important. This was due to past ideas about cheating in sports.
