Waynesville is a city located in Pulaski County, Missouri, in the United States. It's the main city of the county. In 2020, about 5,406 people lived there. Waynesville is found in the beautiful Missouri Ozarks. A long time ago, the famous Route 66 used to pass through this city.

History of Waynesville

Waynesville was planned out in 1839. The city got its name from a person named Anthony Wayne. The local post office has been open since 1834.

During the American Civil War, soldiers from the 5th Missouri State Militia sometimes stayed in Waynesville.

Geography and Nature

Waynesville is located on Roubidoux Creek. This creek is about 2 miles (3.2 km) south of the Gasconade River. The northern part of Fort Leonard Wood is about 2 miles (3.2 km) south of the city.

Inside the city, you can find the Roubidoux Spring. This is the 15th largest spring in Missouri. The Roubidoux Spring was also a stopping point on the historic Trail of Tears.

The United States Census Bureau says that Waynesville covers a total area of 6.45 square miles (16.71 km²). Most of this area, 6.42 square miles (16.63 km²), is land. Only a small part, 0.03 square miles (0.08 km²), is water.

In 2010, there were 4,830 people living in Waynesville. These people lived in 1,894 households, and 1,252 of these were families. The city had about 752 people per square mile (290 per km²). There were 2,088 homes, with about 325 homes per square mile (125 per km²).

Most people, 73.6%, were White. About 12.4% were African American, and 1.1% were Native American. About 3.4% were Asian, and 0.5% were Pacific Islander. The rest were from other groups or mixed races. About 8.1% of the people were Hispanic or Latino.

In the households, 37.8% had children under 18 living with them. About 49.3% were married couples. The average household had 2.48 people, and the average family had 3.04 people.

The average age in Waynesville was 32.6 years old. About 28% of residents were under 18. About 30.6% were between 25 and 44 years old.

Waynesville has a humid subtropical climate. This means it has hot, humid summers and mild winters. This type of climate is common in much of southern Missouri.

Education in Waynesville

Most of Waynesville is part of the Waynesville R-VI School District. A small part is in the Laquey R-V School District.

Waynesville has several schools:

Historic Places to Visit

Waynesville has some interesting historic places:

  • Old Stagecoach Stop: This building is also known as "Black Hotel" or "Pulaski House." It's the oldest building still standing in the county. It started as a place for travelers to stay and eat. During the Civil War, it was used as a hospital for Union soldiers.
  • Pulaski County Courthouse: This historic building is also located in Waynesville.

Getting Around Waynesville

Air Travel

The Waynesville Regional Airport at Forney Field serves the area. Even though it's on Fort Leonard Wood, it's managed by the cities of Waynesville and St. Robert. It can be used by private pilots and has scheduled flights for passengers.

Roads and Highways

The main east-west road is I-44.svg Interstate 44. Before I-44, the most important highway was US 66.svg U.S. Route 66. Route 66 still exists as a scenic road through the area. It goes through places like Devil's Elbow, St. Robert, Waynesville, Buckhorn, and Hazelgreen.

Route 66 has different names in different spots, such as Teardrop Road, Highway Z, Old Route 66, Historic Route 66, and Highway 17. Signs posted by the state help mark most of this old road.

The main north-south roads near Waynesville are:

  • MO-17.svg Route 17: This road crosses Interstate 44 at exit 153 in Buckhorn. It goes east through Waynesville, then turns north towards Crocker, and leaves the county towards Iberia. South of Interstate 44, Highway 17 runs along the west side of Fort Leonard Wood.
  • MO-supp-T.svg Highway T: This road goes north from Highway 17 in Waynesville to Swedeborg. It ends when it meets Highway 133.

Public Transportation

The City of Waynesville does not offer public transportation like buses or shuttles.

Local Media and News

In the Pulaski County area, including Fort Leonard Wood, Waynesville, and St. Robert, KFBD-FM and its sister station KJPW are important radio stations for news. There is also KFLW Radio.

For online news, the Pulaski County Daily News is an online newspaper owned by a local Waynesville resident. The Pulaski County Insider is another online discussion site.

The county's weekly newspaper, the Dixon Pilot, usually does not cover news from Waynesville.
