The white-winged becard (Pachyramphus polychopterus) is a cool bird found in many parts of Central and South America. It's known for its unique look and sounds. Scientists have studied this bird a lot to understand its family tree.

About the White-winged Becard

This bird, whose scientific name is Pachyramphus polychopterus, belongs to a bird family called Tityridae. For a long time, scientists thought it was part of other bird families. But now, most experts agree it fits best with the Tityridae family.

There are actually eight different types, or subspecies, of the white-winged becard. These different types can look quite different from each other. They also have their own special songs and calls. Some scientists even think that these different types might be separate species!

Where Do White-winged Becards Live?

You can find the white-winged becard in many countries across the Americas. These include Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

The only country in South America where you won't find this bird is Chile. Generally, the white-winged becard lives to the east of the Andes mountains. However, in Colombia and Ecuador, you might find them on both sides of these big mountains.

White-winged Becard Habitats

White-winged becards live in many different kinds of places. They usually prefer lower areas, often up to about 1,640 feet (500 meters) above sea level. Sometimes, though, they can be found much higher, even up to 6,560 feet (2,000 meters) in certain spots.
