History of Winslow

Winslow was first mentioned in a special document called a royal charter in 792–793. This document was a gift from Offa of Mercia, a powerful king. He gave Winslow to St Albans Abbey. Back then, it was called Wineshauue, which means 'Wine's Burial Mound'. The word 'hlaw' means 'low hill' or 'mound'.

Later, in the Domesday Book of 1086, Winslow was recorded as Weneslai. This book was a huge survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror.

Archaeologists have found interesting old items here. These include a copper torc from the late Celtic period. A silver drinking-cup from the late Roman times was also discovered. In 1841, a census showed that 1,333 people lived in Winslow.
