AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) is a large American company from Sunnyvale (California) that makes computer hardware. It makes many different computer parts, but it is most famous for its central processing units, or CPUs. Another important product are motherboard chipsets. It started as a company that made products for Intel, another large hardware company. Today's most common CPU made by AMD is the Phenom II and the Athlon II. They have from 1 up to 8 cores (up to 16 cores in server CPUs), at speeds of up to 4 GHz with air cooling (5 GHz with water cooling). In 2006 they bought the company ATI.
