Biography
Starting Out in Athletics (1990–2001)
Antonietta Di Martino was born in Cava de' Tirreni, Italy. She started her athletics journey when she was 12 years old. This was at the Youth Games, where her talent first shone. Interestingly, high jump was not her first sport. For many years, she practiced the javelin throw. She also tried out many other sports. She joined the national team for heptathlon in 2001. This was for the European Cup event.
Early Successes (2001–2006)
Antonietta's amazing high jump skills were first noticed in July 2001. This was during the Italian Championship in Catania. Her jump improved her personal best from 1.93 meters to 1.98 meters. This jump matched the record of another great Italian high jumper, Antonella Bevilacqua.
One month later, she reached the world finals. She finished twelfth at the World Championships in Edmonton. In 2006, she placed fifth at the World Indoor Championships in Moscow. She also finished tenth at the European Championships in Gothenburg.
A Golden Year: 2007
In February 2007, Antonietta jumped 2.00 meters in Banská Bystrica. This jump broke the Italian indoor record of 1.98 meters, which was held by Sara Simeoni. She then won a silver medal at the 2007 European Indoor Championships. There, she jumped 1.96 meters.
Di Martino also won a silver medal at the 2007 World Championships. She jumped 2.03 meters at that event. Her 2008 season was not as good. She finished tenth at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. She ended the year with a serious toe injury. This injury made her think about quitting the sport.
Her Comeback (2009–2012)
In September 2009, Antonietta got a new coach. This helped her get back into great shape. She won the Italian Indoor Championships. However, she got sick and could not compete in the 2009 European Indoor Championships. She then won a bronze medal at the 2009 European Team Championships. Soon after, she beat Blanka Vlašić to win the Golden Gala meeting. She jumped 2.00 meters in Rome.
She jumped 1.99 meters at the 2009 World Championships in Athletics. This earned her a fourth-place finish. She ended the year with a bronze medal at the final World Athletics Final.
Antonietta Di Martino won the gold medal at the 2010 European Team Championships. But she did not make it past the first round at the 2010 European Athletics Championships. She bounced back at the start of the 2011 season. She set a new Italian indoor record of 2.04 meters in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. She continued her great performance in March. She won the European Indoor Championship in Paris with a jump of 2.01 meters.
Records and Special Achievements
Her personal best outdoor jump is 2.03 meters. She achieved this on June 24, 2007, in Milan. This jump broke her own Italian record of 2.02 meters. Her best indoor jump was 2.04 meters. This happened at an indoor high jump event in Slovakia on February 9, 2011. This was a new national record.
Antonietta is only 1.69 meters tall. Her 2.04-meter jump is an unofficial world record. It is the highest jump ever recorded over a woman's own height (by 35 centimeters!). Di Martino also used to compete in the heptathlon. Her personal best in that event was 5542 points in 2001.
Missing the 2012 Summer Olympics
Antonietta Di Martino hurt her knee in April 2012. This was just four months before the Olympic Games. She had to stop training for a while. The National Athletics Federation (FIDAL) first thought her injury was not too serious. They said she would need three weeks of recovery.
However, less than a month before the Olympics, they found out the injury was much worse. She needed surgery, which meant she could not compete in London. Her knee surgery happened just a few days before the high jump event at the Olympics.
