 British West Indies (1960)

Barbados is a small island nation. It first took part in the Summer Olympic Games in 1968. Since then, Barbados has sent athletes to almost every Summer Games. The only time they missed was in 1980 Summer Olympics. This was because Barbados joined a group of countries that did not go to the Games that year. Barbados has never competed in the Winter Olympic Games.

Barbados has won only one Olympic medal. It was a bronze medal. Sprinter Obadele Thompson won it. He earned it in the men's 100 metres race at the 2000 Summer Olympics.

Before 1968, Barbados was part of the West Indies Federation. This was a group of Caribbean islands. In 1960, athletes from this group competed together. A Barbadian athlete named James Wedderburn was on the 4 × 400 metre relay team. This team won a bronze medal that year. Another Barbadian, weightlifter Grantley Sobers, also competed in 1960.
