Trinidad and Tobago, a small island nation in the Caribbean, first joined the Summer Olympic Games in 1948. This was before they became an independent country from Great Britain. Even though it's a small nation, Trinidad and Tobago has become well-known in international sports.

In 1946, a person named Sir Lennox O’Reilly helped start the country's first Olympic committee. Since then, Trinidad and Tobago has taken part in sixteen Summer Olympics and three Winter Olympics. They have also competed in two Summer Paralympics.

Trinidad and Tobago's First Olympic Appearances

1948 Summer Olympics in London

The 1948 Summer Olympics were held in London, United Kingdom. This was the very first time Trinidad and Tobago sent athletes to the Olympics. The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee sent nine athletes and officials. They competed in three different sports.

Errol Knowles was the Chef de Mission, which means he was the leader of the team.

Athletics in 1948

Three athletes and one official took part in athletics.

  • George Lewis competed in the 100 m and 200 m races.
  • Manny Ramjohn ran in the 500 m and 1000 m races.
  • Wilfred Tull competed in the 800 m and 1500 m races.
  • A.E. Browne was their manager and coach.

Trinidad and Tobago did not win any medals in athletics in 1948.

Cycling in 1948

One athlete and one official represented cycling.

  • Compton Gonsalves competed in the Kilometer Time Trial.
  • Laurie Rogers was the manager and coach.

Compton Gonsalves finished 17th in his event. He completed the kilometer time trial in 1 minute and 32 seconds. Trinidad and Tobago did not win any medals in cycling in 1948.

Weightlifting in 1948

One athlete and one official represented weightlifting.

  • Rodney Wilkes competed in the featherweight category.
  • Lionel Seemungal was the manager and coach.

Rodney Wilkes made history by winning the first-ever Olympic medal for Trinidad and Tobago! He won a silver medal by lifting a total of 317.5 kilograms in three lifts.

1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki

The 1952 Summer Olympics took place in Helsinki, Finland. This was the second time Trinidad and Tobago participated. The team sent four athletes and officials to compete in one sport.

Errol Knowles was again the Chef de Mission.

Weightlifting in 1952

Two athletes and one coach represented weightlifting.

  • Rodney Wilkes competed in the featherweight category.
  • Lennox Kilgour competed in the middle-heavyweight category.
  • Freddy Mendes was the coach.

Both athletes won medals for Trinidad and Tobago! Rodney Wilkes lifted 322.5 kilograms and won a bronze medal. Lennox Kilgour lifted 402.5 kilograms and also won a bronze medal.

1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne

The 1956 Summer Olympics were held in Melbourne, Australia. This was the third time Trinidad and Tobago competed. Eight athletes and officials represented the nation in three sports.

Dr. Roderick Marcano was the Chef de Mission for this team.

Three athletes competed in athletics.

  • Mike Agostini ran in the 100 m and 200 m races.
  • Joseph Goddard also competed in the 100 m and 200 m races.
  • Edmund Turton was another athlete.

Michael Agostini performed well, placing 6th in the 100 m and 4th in the 200 m.

Cycling in 1956

One athlete represented cycling.

  • Hilton Mitchell competed in the Match Sprint and Kilometer Time Trial.

Weightlifting in 1956

Two athletes and one official represented weightlifting.

  • Lennox Kilgour competed in the middle-heavyweight category.
  • Rodney Wilkes competed in the featherweight category.
  • Alexander Chapman was the coach.

Lennox Kilgour finished 6th, and Rodney Wilkes placed 4th, lifting 330 kilograms.

1960 Summer Olympics in Rome

The 1960 Summer Olympics were held in Rome, Italy. In 1958, several Caribbean islands, including Trinidad and Tobago, formed a group called the West Indies Federation. Because of this, a combined West Indian Team entered the Olympics.

Trinidad and Tobago contributed four athletes to this team:

  • Clifton Bertrand in Athletics
  • Clyde Rimple in Cycling
  • Richard Bennett in Sailing
  • David Farfan in Sailing

The British West Indies team won two bronze medals. However, these medals were not specifically given to Trinidad and Tobago athletes.

1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo

The 1964 Summer Olympics took place in Tokyo, Japan. This was the fourth time Trinidad and Tobago was represented at the Olympics. The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee sent twenty athletes and officials to compete in four sports.

Knolly Henderson was the Chef de Mission.

Athletics in 1964

Seven athletes and two officials represented athletics.

  • Kent Bernard was part of the 4 × 400 m relay team.
  • Clifton Bertrand also competed.
  • Wilton Jackson was another athlete.
  • Wendell Mottley competed in the 400 m and the 4 × 400 m relay.
  • Edwin Roberts competed in the 200 m and the 4 × 400 m relay.
  • Edwin Skinner was part of the 4 × 400 m relay team.
  • E. McDonald Bailey was the coach.
  • Broderick Lynch was the manager.

Trinidad and Tobago had a great performance in athletics! Edwin Roberts won a bronze medal in the 200 m race. The men’s 4 × 400 m relay team also won a bronze medal. Wendell Mottley won a silver medal in the 400 m race.

Cycling in 1964

Three athletes and two officials represented cycling.

  • Ronald Cassidy competed in Track cycling.
  • Roger Gibbon competed in Track cycling.
  • Fitzroy Hoyte competed in Track cycling.
  • Gordon Carew was the coach.
  • Compton Gonsalves was the mechanic.

Sailing in 1964

Two athletes and one official represented sailing.

  • Cordell Barrow competed in the Flying Dutchman event.
  • Rawle Barrow also competed in the Flying Dutchman event.
  • Bob Levorsen was the coach.

The sailing team finished 20th in their event.

Weightlifting in 1964

Two athletes and one official represented weightlifting.

  • Brandon Bailey competed in the heavyweight category.
  • Hugo Gittens competed in the lightweight category.
  • Alexander Chapman was the coach.

Hugo Gittens placed 11th in his lightweight class. Brandon Bailey placed 20th in the heavyweight division.
