During and after World War I, a company called S.A. de Laminoirs et Cablerie Cossonay mined peat near Bavois. Peat is a type of soil made from decayed plants, often used as fuel. They used special narrow-gauge railways to move the peat.

These railways had different track widths, like 500 mm and 600 mm. They had many wagons to carry the wet peat from where it was cut to where it was processed. This was a big operation for its time.
