Broughton Moor is a small village in Cumbria, England. It's located on a large moor (an open, uncultivated area). The village is about 2 miles (3.2 km) north of Broughton. It's also 5 miles (8 km) north-west of Cockermouth, 2.5 miles (4 km) south of Maryport, and 4.5 miles (7.2 km) north of Workington.

In 2011, about 783 people lived in Broughton Moor. Besides the main village, the area also includes a place called Harker Marsh (grid reference NY061345).

Village History

The name Broughton Moor first appeared in records way back in 1187. This was in the old documents of Holme Cultram Abbey. Broughton Moor became its own official civil parish on October 1, 1898. This happened by a special order from the Local Government Board. It was created from parts of Great Broughton and Little Broughton.

St Columba's Church

The village church, called St Columba, was built in 1904. It's made of stone and has a bell tower. The church was officially opened on May 3, 1905. Villagers helped build it, following plans by a famous church architect, W. D. Caroe. He designed it for free! It's believed he was inspired by a visit to St Columba's on the island of Iona. This gives the church an old Celtic feel. St Columba's is now a special listed building, meaning it's protected for its history. The church records go back to 1905. There is also a Wesleyan chapel, built in 1903.

Mining Past

Broughton Moor was once an important part of Cumberland's coal mining industry. There were many collieries (coal mines) here. Open-pit mining (where coal is dug from the surface) started in April 1958. Coal production stopped in June 1959. However, it began again after 1964 when the "Blooming Heather" mine expanded towards the village.

Between the 1930s and 1992, the area was also home to a Royal Navy Armaments Depot. This was a place where the navy stored weapons. You can learn more about it at RNAD Broughton Moor.

How the Village is Run

Broughton Moor is part of the Workington area for the parliament. This means people in Broughton Moor vote for a MP to represent them in the national government.

For local matters, Broughton Moor is part of the Cumberland unitary authority area. This local council helps manage things like schools and roads.

The village also has its own local council, called the Broughton Moor Council. This council helps make decisions for the village itself.

Broughton Moor Today

Broughton Moor is a peaceful village. It's located almost in the middle of a triangle formed by the towns of Cockermouth, Maryport, and Workington. The village was first built to house people who worked in the mines.

Today, the local coal mines are closed. After a lot of open-pit mining, the land has gone back to being used for farming. Most people who live in Broughton Moor now work in nearby towns and industries.

Village Life

Broughton Moor has a primary school called Broughton Moor Primary School. About 70 children attend the school, and there's also a preschool. Besides St Columba's Parish Church, there is also a Methodist Chapel.

The village also has a local pub called The Miners Arms. There's a village shop where you can buy things, and a fish and chip shop for tasty takeaways.

Nature and Wildlife

The area around the village is great for walks. You can explore fields and woodlands. There's also a small tarn, which is a mountain lake. The area is home to many different kinds of wildlife. You might see red squirrels, foxes, badgers, and many birds. These include buzzards, sparrowhawks, pheasants, and owls.

A company called Persimmon Homes is building over 40 new homes on part of the land near the tarn.

The village is still well-known locally because of the important role it played during World War II.
