History of Cass County
Cass County was created in 1846. It was formed from parts of Bowie County. As mentioned, it was named after Lewis Cass, a U.S. Senator. He was a big supporter of Texas becoming part of the United States.
In the early days, many large farms called plantations grew cotton here. By 1860, most people living in the county were enslaved African Americans. After the American Civil War, these freedmen (formerly enslaved people) often worked as tenant farmers or sharecroppers. This continued into the early 1900s. Black residents in Cass County faced unfair treatment and violence during this time.
For a short period, from 1861 to 1871, the county was called Davis County. This was in honor of Jefferson Davis, who was the president of the Confederate States of America. This county is not to be confused with Jeff Davis County in West Texas, which still exists today.
Geography of Cass County
Cass County covers a total area of about 960 square miles. Most of this (937 square miles) is land, and a smaller part (23 square miles) is water.
Cass County is special because it's one of only three counties in Texas that touches two other U.S. states. The other two are Bowie and Dallam counties. Cass County is part of a "tripoint" where Texas, Arkansas, and Louisiana meet.
