On April 12, 2018, Richards signed his first professional contract with FC Dallas.

Playing for Bayern Munich

In May 2018, Richards and another FC Dallas player, Thomas Roberts, went to FC Bayern Munich for a 10-day trial. This was part of an agreement between the two clubs. Richards played well during the trial. In July, he was offered a one-year loan with the German club.

On July 21, 2018, Richards played his first game for the Bayern senior team. This was during the 2018 International Champions Cup. He came into the game in the 62nd minute. Loan to Hoffenheim

Joining Crystal Palace

Richards signed a five-year contract with Premier League club Crystal Palace on July 27, 2022. He moved from Bayern Munich for a fee of €12 million.

In his first season, 2022–23, he played in some games. In the next season, 2023–24, he started playing more often. At first, he played as a defensive midfielder. This was not his usual position. But under the new manager, Oliver Glasner, he moved back to his favorite position, center-back. He scored his first goal for the club on February 24. It was the first goal in a 3–0 home win against Burnley. This was also the first goal for Palace under manager Glasner.

At the start of the 2024–25 season, Richards did not start as many games. This was because of a new loan player, Trevoh Chalobah. Richards only started six league games in the first half of the season. However, he played more after Chalobah returned to Chelsea in January 2025. Richards became a very important part of the defense. He played alongside Marc Guéhi and Maxence Lacroix. He scored his second goal for the club on April 12 in a 5–2 loss to Manchester City.

Crystal Palace went on to win the FA Cup. This was their first major trophy ever. They also qualified for European competition for the first time. Richards was praised for his strong defense in the 1–0 win against City in the 2025 FA Cup final. He was the only Crystal Palace player to play every minute of every game in the FA Cup. He also became only the second American player to play in and win an FA Cup final. The first was Tim Howard in 2004.
