The Story of Cherry Coke
Long before Coca-Cola Cherry was officially sold, people were already making their own versions. In old-fashioned diners and drugstore soda fountains, workers would add cherry syrup to regular Coca-Cola. This made a popular, unofficial "Cherry Coke."
When Did Cherry Coke Start?
The Coca-Cola Company first tested an official cherry-flavored Coke in 1982. They offered it to visitors at the 1982 World's Fair in Knoxville, Tennessee. After more tests, Cherry Coke officially launched in the U.S. in the summer of 1985.
It was the third type of Coca-Cola available at that time. The other two were regular Coca-Cola and Diet Coke. Cherry Coke was the very first flavored Coke. It became quite popular, especially when the company changed the original Coca-Cola recipe to New Coke.
Other Flavored Cokes
After Cherry Coke, the Coca-Cola Company started making other flavored sodas. These included Vanilla Coke in 2002. Later, they added flavors like lime, raspberry, and orange. Many of these are sold in different countries. Some are only available in special Freestyle vending machines.
Where Can You Find Cherry Coke?
Coca-Cola Cherry is sold in many countries around the world. Besides the U.S., you can find it in places like Sweden, United Kingdom, Germany, France, Poland, and South Korea. It's even available in Japan, where it's still known as Cherry Coke.
Cherry Coke Around the World
- In New Zealand, you might find it in some supermarkets. It's usually imported from the UK or the U.S.
- It used to be sold in countries like Australia and Brazil. Even if it's not bottled there anymore, some stores might import it.
- In Canada, Coca-Cola Cherry returned to stores in 2016. It was also available for special holiday seasons before that.
- Since 2011, it's been available in Switzerland.
- In 2013, it returned to Croatia, Romania, and Spain.
- It came back to Brazil during the 2016 Summer Olympics.
How Cherry Coke Looks
The way Coca-Cola Cherry looks on cans and bottles changes from country to country. In the U.S., the labels have changed several times since 1985.
Changing Designs
Most current designs use the standard Coca-Cola label style. But they add a pink or purple color. You can often see pictures of cherries on the packaging too.
In 2007, Coca-Cola launched a new look for Cherry Coke in the U.S. The famous rapper Jay-Z helped design the new can graphics. A new sugar-free version, Coca-Cola Cherry Zero, was also introduced then.
The "One Brand" Look
In 2019, Coca-Cola Cherry got another new look in the U.S. This was part of Coca-Cola's "One Brand" plan. The new design puts the word "Coca-Cola" over a red circle. A picture of a cherry is below the text. The background color of the can or bottle is still purple.
Sugar-Free Cherry Coke
Coca-Cola also makes sugar-free versions of Cherry Coke for those who want less sugar.
Diet Coke Cherry
Diet Cherry Coke was first made in 1986. It was a low-calorie version of the original. It was also the first new flavor for the Diet Coke brand. In 2005, its name changed to Diet Coke Cherry.
In 2018, Diet Coke Cherry was replaced with Diet Coke Feisty Cherry. This new version had a stronger cherry taste. However, The Coca-Cola Company stopped selling Diet Coke Feisty Cherry in the U.S. and the UK by the end of 2020.
Coca-Cola Cherry Zero
Coca-Cola Cherry Zero was launched in the United States in 2007. This is another low-calorie option. It is based on the Coca-Cola Zero Sugar recipe.
Coca-Cola Cherry Zero is now sold in many other countries. These include France, United Kingdom, Belgium, Hungary, Poland, and Germany.
