The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, also known as Developing-8, is a group of eight developing countries. These countries work together to help each other grow their economies. The members are Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.

Together, these eight countries have a huge population. About 1.2 billion people live in these nations. This is almost 13% of the world's population! They also cover a large area, about 7.6 million square kilometers. This is 5% of all the land on Earth. In 2010, these countries traded about $68 billion worth of goods and services with each other. Their total economic output (called GDP) was around $4.92 trillion in 2023.

What D-8 Aims To Do

The D-8 group focuses on many important areas to help its members develop. These include money and banking, helping rural areas, and using science and technology. They also work on improving health, energy, and protecting the environment.

When the D-8 first started in 1997, their main goal was to help countries grow economically and socially. They decided to follow some key ideas:

  • Choose peace instead of fighting.
  • Talk things out instead of arguing.
  • Work together instead of taking advantage of others.
  • Be fair to everyone.
  • Treat everyone equally.
  • Support democracy instead of unfair rule.

In 2006, the D-8 leaders met again. They promised to work on specific goals. For example, they wanted to solve economic differences within their countries. They also agreed to work together on energy. This includes finding new and clean energy sources. They stressed how important D-8 is for helping its members' economies grow. They also want to make sure it helps global trade.

How D-8 Is Organized

The D-8 has a clear structure to make decisions and get things done.

The Summit

The highest authority is the Summit. This meeting happens every two years. The leaders of each member country attend the Summit. They make the biggest decisions for the organization.

The Council

The Council is the main group for making decisions. It is where important issues are discussed. The foreign affairs ministers from each member country are part of the Council.

The Commission

The Commission is in charge of putting decisions into action. Each member country appoints a Commissioner. These Commissioners make sure that their country follows the D-8's plans.

The Secretary-General

An executive director, called the Secretary-General, is chosen by the D-8 members. This person helps with communication. They also supervise during summits and other meetings.
