The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, also called Developing-8, is a group of nine countries working together. These countries are Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey, and Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan joined the group on December 19, 2024. They work together to help their economies grow and develop.
Together, these nine countries have over 1.28 billion people. That's about 16% of the world's population! They cover a huge area of land, about 7.62 million square kilometers. In 2016, these countries traded about $65 billion worth of goods and services. By 2020, this trade grew to around $133 billion. In 2024, the total value of their economies was about $5.1 trillion. The D-8 group aims to increase their trade to $500 billion by 2030. They also plan to work more closely on things like farming, energy, and transportation.

What D-8 Aims to Do
The D-8 group focuses on helping its member countries grow and develop. They work on many important areas. These include money and banking, helping rural areas, science, technology, and improving people's lives. They also focus on farming, energy, the environment, and health.
Main Goals of D-8
When the D-8 group first met in Istanbul in 1997, they set out their main goals. They wanted to achieve social and economic development based on several key ideas:
- Choosing peace instead of fighting.
- Talking things through instead of arguing.
- Working together instead of taking advantage of others.
- Being fair to everyone.
- Treating everyone equally.
- Supporting democracy instead of unfair rule.
How D-8 Works to Achieve Goals
In 2006, at their meeting in Bali, the D-8 leaders showed how they put their goals into action. They promised to work together to solve economic differences within their countries. They also agreed to improve cooperation in energy, especially by finding new and renewable energy sources. The leaders stressed that D-8 is important for helping its member countries' economies grow and for boosting global trade.
How D-8 Is Organized
The D-8 organization has a clear structure to help it run smoothly.
The Summit
The Summit is the highest authority in D-8. It's like the main meeting where the leaders of each member country come together. These meetings happen every two years.
The Council
The Council is where important decisions are made. It's also a place to discuss issues. The foreign affairs ministers from each member country are part of the Council.
The Commission
The Commission is in charge of making sure things get done. Each member country appoints a Commissioner. These Commissioners are responsible for making sure their country follows the D-8's plans and rules.
Executive Director
An executive director is chosen by the D-8 members. This person helps with communication and oversees things during summits and other meetings.
