according to International Monetary Fund estimates |}
This article lists countries based on their estimated economic size, measured by something called GDP (PPP). GDP stands for gross domestic product, which is the total value of all goods and services produced in a country over a certain period. PPP means purchasing power parity. It's a way to compare how much you can buy with your money in different countries.
Imagine you have $100. In one country, that might buy you a lot of food and clothes, but in another, it might buy very little. PPP helps economists compare economies more fairly by looking at what money can actually buy locally, not just how much it's worth when exchanged for another currency. This helps us understand the real size of a country's economy and how well people might live there.
Economists use a special unit called the "international dollar" to make these comparisons easier. This helps to show the true differences in how much people can afford in different places. Sometimes, places that aren't officially countries, like Hong Kong, are included because they have their own distinct economies.

Understanding GDP (PPP)
What is GDP?
Gross domestic product (GDP) is like a giant report card for a country's economy. It adds up the value of everything a country makes and sells in a year. This includes things like cars, food, movies, and even services like haircuts or doctor visits. A higher GDP usually means a country's economy is strong and busy.
What is Purchasing Power Parity (PPP)?
Purchasing power parity (PPP) is a way to compare economies that makes sense of different prices. For example, a haircut might cost $10 in one country but $50 in another. If you just convert money using regular exchange rates, it might look like people in the $10 haircut country are poorer. But with PPP, economists adjust for these price differences. They try to figure out how much a "basket" of common goods and services would cost in each country. This gives a more accurate picture of how much people can actually buy and how big their local economy really is.
PPP is especially helpful for:
- Comparing how much people can afford to buy in their own country.
- Understanding how wealthy a country's people are in terms of their daily lives.
- Measuring global poverty thresholds, which helps organizations like the United Nations understand where help is most needed.
However, PPP isn't perfect for everything. It doesn't always show how much money flows between countries or how good the quality of similar goods might be.
How Countries are Ranked
This list uses information from different trusted sources to estimate each country's GDP (PPP). The main sources are:
- The International Monetary Fund (IMF): They provide forecasts, which are educated guesses about what the GDP (PPP) will be in the future, often for the current year. Their data is usually in millions of international dollars.
- The World Bank: They also collect and publish GDP (PPP) estimates, usually for the previous year.
- The CIA World Factbook: This source also provides GDP (PPP) data.
These organizations gather information from 196 economies, including 189 U.N. member states and other areas like Aruba, Hong Kong, Kosovo, Macau, Palestine, Puerto Rico, and Taiwan. Even places that aren't fully recognized as independent countries are included if they have their own distinct economies. These are often shown in italics in the table.
Table
The table below shows the GDP (PPP) for many countries and territories. It is first sorted by the average of the estimates from the different sources. You can click on the column headers to sort the table differently if you want to see the rankings from just one source.
The links in the "Country/Territory" column will take you to more information about that country's economy.
