Family Facts

As of September 2022, King George V had 6 children, 9 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 52 great-great-grandchildren. Some members of the family are not in the line of succession to the throne. This can happen if they are Roman Catholic or if their parents married after they were born (this is called "legitimated by subsequent marriage").

For example, some members of the Duke of Kent's family are Catholic. If a royal family member becomes Catholic, or marries a Catholic, they used to be removed from the line of succession. However, rules changed in 2015 with the Perth Agreement. Now, marrying a Catholic no longer removes someone from the line of succession, but being Catholic yourself still does.
