Fabian Lukas Schär (born 20 December 1991) is a Swiss professional football player. He plays as a centre-back for Premier League club Newcastle United. Fabian is known for his strong free kicks, long-range shots, and accurate long passes.
He started his career at his hometown club, Wil. In 2012, Schär moved to Basel, where he won the Swiss Super League championship three times. After that, he played for TSG Hoffenheim and Deportivo de La Coruña.
Fabian Schär has also played for the Swiss national team since 2013. He represented Switzerland in the FIFA World Cup in 2014, 2018, and 2022. He also played in the UEFA European Championship in 2016, 2020, and 2024.

Club Career Highlights
Starting at Wil
Fabian Schär was born in Wil, Switzerland. He began his football journey at his local club, Wil. He moved up through the youth teams and soon played regularly for Wil's reserve squad.
He made his first league appearance on 29 November 2009. His first goal for Wil came on 30 October 2010, in an away game.
Playing for Basel
On 4 July 2012, Schär joined Basel on a three-year contract. He made his debut in the Swiss Super League on 29 September. His first goal for Basel was on 7 October, helping his team win 3–2 at home.
At the end of the 2012–13 season, Schär and Basel won the Swiss Super League title. They also reached the final of the 2012–13 Swiss Cup, finishing as runners-up. In the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League, Basel made it to the semi-finals. They were knocked out by Chelsea.
Schär won his second league championship with Basel at the end of the 2013–14 season. They also reached the final of the 2013–14 Swiss Cup again. In the 2013–14 UEFA Champions League, Basel played in the group stage. They then moved to the Europa League knockout stage, reaching the quarter-finals.
The 2014–15 season was very successful for Basel and Schär. Basel won the championship for the sixth time in a row. They also reached the final of the 2014–15 Swiss Cup, but finished as runners-up. Basel played in the Champions League group stage. They made it to the knockout stages after a draw against Liverpool. Basel was later defeated by Porto in the Round of 16.
Time at Hoffenheim
On 4 June 2015, Schär signed with Hoffenheim in Germany. He scored his only goal for the club on 16 April 2016. It was a header in a 2–1 win against Hertha BSC.
Moving to Deportivo La Coruña
On 21 July 2017, Schär joined Deportivo de La Coruña in Spain. He signed a four-year deal. He made his La Liga debut on 20 August against Real Madrid. He scored two goals during the 2017–18 season. Unfortunately, his team was relegated that season.
Playing for Newcastle United
On 26 July 2018, Schär signed a three-year contract with Newcastle United. He made his debut for the club on 26 August 2018. Schär scored his first goals for Newcastle on 19 January 2019, scoring twice in a 3–0 win.
He scored his third Newcastle goal against Burnley with a fantastic long-range shot. This goal won the Premier League Goal of the Month award for February. His fourth goal came in the final game of that season. On 4 October 2023, Schär scored his first Champions League goal for Newcastle. It was in a 4–1 home victory against Paris Saint-Germain.
On 8 January 2024, Schär extended his contract with Newcastle until the summer of 2025. On 13 April 2024, he scored his 50th career goal. This happened during Newcastle's 4–0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
On 16 March 2025, Schär played a full game for Newcastle in their victory in the 2025 EFL Cup final. This made him part of the first Newcastle team to win a major domestic trophy in 70 years. He scored a goal in the third round and another in the quarter-final on the way to the final.
International Career
Youth Teams
Fabian Schär played for Switzerland's youth teams, including the under-20 and under-21 squads. He made his debut for the Swiss U-20 team in November 2011. His first game for the Swiss U-21 team was in February 2012. He scored his first goal for the U-21 team in September 2012.
He was chosen to represent Switzerland at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. He played in the first two games, but the team was knocked out in the group stage.
Senior National Team
On 8 August 2013, Schär was called up to the Swiss senior team for the first time. He made his debut on 14 August 2013, in a friendly match against Brazil.
On 6 September 2013, Schär made his first competitive start for Switzerland. He scored a goal in a 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Iceland. Four days later, he scored both goals in a 2–0 away win against Norway. He helped Switzerland qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
On 13 May 2014, Schär was part of Switzerland's squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He played in the team's third match, helping them win 3–0 against Honduras. He also played the full game against Argentina in the Round of 16.
During UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying, Schär scored twice. In the first game of UEFA Euro 2016, he scored the only goal in a 1–0 win against Albania. He played in all of Switzerland's matches during the tournament. In the Round of 16 against Poland, Schär scored in the penalty shootout. However, Switzerland lost the shootout and was eliminated.
He was included in the squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He played in all three group matches as Switzerland reached the knockout stage. Schär was suspended for the Round of 16 match against Sweden, which Switzerland lost.
In June 2019, he played in the 2019 UEFA Nations League Finals. In the third-place play-off against England, he scored in the penalty shootout, but Switzerland lost.
In 2021, Schär was part of the Switzerland squad for UEFA Euro 2020. He played in the opening match against Wales. He also appeared as a substitute against France and Spain in the knockout stages. He scored in the penalty shootout against France.
In November 2022, he was selected for the Switzerland squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He played in the third group match against Serbia, which Switzerland won. He also played in the Round of 16 match, where Switzerland lost to Portugal.
On 7 June 2024, Schär was named in Switzerland's squad for UEFA Euro 2024. He played the full match in the team's opening game against Hungary, which Switzerland won 3–1.
On 26 August 2024, Schär announced that he was retiring from international football.
