Early Career Highlights

Fabiana Murer set a new personal best outdoors in June 2008. She jumped 4.80 meters in São Paulo, which was a new South American record. At the 2008 Summer Olympics, she finished tenth with a jump of 4.50 meters. During this competition, one of her poles was lost by the organizers. This made it hard for her to perform her best.

She improved her outdoor record to 4.82 meters in June 2009. This happened at the Troféu Brasil Caixa de Atletismo meet. She won her fifth Brazilian championship in this event. This jump broke the area record for the eleventh time. She competed at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin. However, she did not jump as high as she had earlier in the season. She finished with a best jump of 4.55 meters. She later improved to 4.60 meters at the 2009 IAAF World Athletics Final, winning a silver medal.

Winning Gold Medals

At the 2010 IAAF World Indoor Championships, Fabiana won her first major world title. She jumped 4.80 meters on her first try. This happened after another top athlete, Yelena Isinbayeva, missed her attempts. Fabiana then improved her indoor record to 4.83 meters. This was at a Grand Prix event in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

She further improved her outdoor record to 4.85 meters in June. This was at the 2010 Ibero-American Championships in Spain. This jump made her one of the top pole vaulters of all time. She then tried to jump over 4.93 meters but did not succeed.

Fabiana was very successful in the 2010 IAAF Diamond League. She won three of the six main events. Her jump of 4.81 meters at the Weltklasse Zurich meeting made her the first winner of the women's pole vault in the Diamond League. She also represented the Americas team at the 2010 IAAF Continental Cup. She won a bronze medal there. She kept her national title at the Troféu Brasil de Atletismo. She jumped 4.70 meters to end her season.

In 2011, Fabiana Murer made history. She became the first Brazilian to win the IAAF World Championship. She jumped 4.85 meters at the 2011 World Championships in Daegu.

Olympic Challenges and Later Success

Fabiana had high hopes for the 2012 Summer Olympics. However, she did not make it to the finals. She missed her first two tries at 4.55 meters. She then stopped her last attempt. She said the wind conditions were not good for her.

In 2014, Fabiana won the second Diamond League circuit. She won four of the seven main events that year.

After the 2012 Olympics, Fabiana's performances were not as strong for a while. But in 2015, she earned two silver medals. She won silver at both the 2015 Pan American Games and the 2015 World Championships. She was only beaten by Yarisley Silva from Cuba. In the World Championships, Fabiana reached her personal best again, jumping 4.85 meters.

On July 3, 2016, she jumped 4.87 meters at the Troféu Brasil de Atletismo. This was in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil. This jump improved her own Brazilian and South American records. It was also the trials for the Rio 2016 Olympics. Later that month, Fabiana felt pain in her neck. Tests showed she had a spinal disc problem. She went through a lot of physical therapy. This was to make sure she could perform well at the 2016 Summer Olympics in her home country. But at the Games, Fabiana failed her first attempts at 4.55 meters. She later said this was because she had not fully recovered from her injury.
