List of United States congressional districts facts for kids

In the United States, a congressional district is a special area created for electing members to the United States House of Representatives. There are currently 435 voting seats in the House of Representatives. Each of these seats represents about 761,169 people, based on the 2020 United States census. This number of seats has been mostly the same since 1913.
The government agency called the Census Bureau counts everyone in the U.S. every ten years. This count is called the decennial census. The numbers from this census are used to figure out how many congressional districts each state gets. This process is known as "apportionment". For example, the elections in 2022 were the first ones to use the new districts based on the 2020 census.
Each state is in charge of drawing the lines for its own districts. This process is called redistricting. Sometimes, a state might have one "at-large" district, meaning the whole state is one district. Redistricting happens if a state gains or loses representatives after a census. It can also happen if the population in a district changes a lot. State governments draw these district lines. Sometimes, they might draw them in a way that favors one political party, which is called gerrymandering. Districts can sometimes keep the same boundaries but get new numbers.
This article lists the 435 current congressional districts. It also includes many older districts that are no longer used. Plus, it mentions the areas that send non-voting delegates to the House of Representatives.

Understanding Congressional Districts
What is a Congressional District?
A congressional district is a specific geographic area within a state. People living in that area vote for one person to represent them in the United States House of Representatives. This person is called a Representative or Congressman/Congresswoman.
How Many People Are in a District?
The total number of voting seats in the House of Representatives is 435. This number has been fixed since 1913. Each district is supposed to have roughly the same number of people. After the 2020 census, each district represents about 761,169 people.
How Districts Change: Apportionment and Redistricting
Every 10 years, the U.S. government counts everyone in the country. This count helps decide how many representatives each state gets. This process is called apportionment. If a state's population grows, it might get more representatives. If it shrinks, it might get fewer.
After the number of representatives for each state is decided, the states then redraw their district maps. This is called redistricting. States can also redraw maps at other times if their population changes a lot. Sometimes, district lines are drawn to give one political party an advantage. This is known as gerrymandering.
