Vermont is a state in the United States. It has 14 different colleges and universities. These are places where students go to learn after high school. They can study many different subjects.
These schools include a big research university. There are also five master's universities. These schools offer advanced degrees. Vermont also has an art school and a law school. Other schools offer two-year or four-year degrees. One school from another state also has programs in Vermont.
The biggest public university in Vermont is the University of Vermont. It's often called UVM. The other public schools are part of the Vermont State Colleges system. This system includes Vermont State University and the Community College of Vermont.
Two schools share the title of oldest. The University of Vermont was started in 1791. But students didn't start classes until 1800. Middlebury College was started in 1800. It was the first to give out a degree in 1802. Vermont's newest college is Landmark College. It was founded in 1984. It helps students with learning disabilities.
The schools in Vermont have different sizes. The University of Vermont is the largest. It has over 13,000 students. Sterling College is a private school. It is the smallest with only 112 students. All 14 schools are officially recognized. This means their degrees are valid.

Schools from Other States
Sometimes, colleges from other states can offer classes and degrees in Vermont. They need special permission from the Vermont State Board of Education.
Right now, only Southern New Hampshire University offers programs in Vermont. They have graduate programs in Colchester. These programs used to be part of another college that closed.
In the past, other out-of-state schools had programs here. Springfield College offered a degree in human services until 2020. The Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences also had a campus in Colchester. It closed in 2021.
Schools Not Fully Recognized
Some schools in Vermont can offer degrees. But they are not yet fully recognized by a national group. This recognition is called accreditation.
- The Center for Cartoon Studies in White River Junction offers a special art degree.
- Northeastern Baptist College in Bennington offers four-year degrees.
