List of winners of the Boston Marathon facts for kids
The Boston Marathon is a super famous long-distance running race held in Massachusetts, USA. It's about 26.2-mile (42.2 km) long. This race is special because it's the oldest yearly marathon in the world, starting way back in 1897! It's also one of the six biggest marathons globally, called World Marathon Majors.
The Boston Marathon usually happens on the third Monday in April, which is a holiday called Patriots' Day. In the very first race, only 15 men ran, and John McDermott was the winner. The race has only been canceled twice: once in 1918 because of World War I, and again in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many different countries have had winners in the Boston Marathon. American men have won the most times (43 wins), followed by Kenyan men (26 wins), and Canadian men (16 wins). For women, Kenyan runners have won 17 times, American women 16 times, and Ethiopian women 8 times. A super successful athlete is Ernst van Dyk, who has won the men's wheelchair race 10 times! The fastest times on the current course belong to Geoffrey Mutai (men), Sharon Lokedi (women), Marcel Hug (men's wheelchair), and Manuela Schär (women's wheelchair).

History of Winners
Early Champions
Clarence DeMar is a legend! He won the men's race seven times, which is more than any other runner. His first win was in 1911, and his last was in 1930.
For a long time, women weren't officially allowed to run the Boston Marathon. But some brave women started running unofficially in 1966, even though it was against the rules. The first woman to finish the race was Bobbi Gibb in 1966. Later, in 1996, the first six unofficial wins by women (from 1966 to 1971) were officially recognized. In 1972, Nina Kuscsik became the first official female winner. Catherine Ndereba has won the women's race four times, which is the most in that division.
Wheelchair and Handcycle Divisions
The Boston Marathon was also the first major marathon to include a wheelchair division, starting in 1975. Robert Hall won that first official wheelchair race. However, the very first person to complete the race in a wheelchair was Eugene Roberts in 1970. The first woman to finish in a wheelchair was Sharon Rahn in 1977.
As mentioned, Ernst van Dyk has won the men's wheelchair division an amazing 10 times. For the women's wheelchair division, Jean Driscoll holds the record with seven wins, and she also holds the record for the most wins in a row (seven!).
More recently, a handcyclist division was officially added in 2017, though handcyclists had participated before that. Tom Davis has won the first three men's handcycle races and holds the course record. Alicia Dana has won the women's handcycle race three times, setting a new course record each time.
Course Records and World Records
The Boston Marathon course is known for being quite hilly and goes from one point to another, not in a loop. Because of this, it's not usually the place where new world records are set.
Only one men's world record has been officially recognized at Boston: Suh Yun-bok set it in 1947 with a time of 2 hours, 25 minutes, and 39 seconds. Some other fast times were set, but later it was found the course was a bit too short, so those records didn't count.
In 1975, Liane Winter set a women's world record, helped by a strong tailwind. Eight years later, in 1983, Joan Benoit broke a world record that had just been set the day before at the London Marathon!
Since 1990, the Boston Marathon hasn't been eligible for official world records because the start and finish lines are too far apart, and the course goes mostly downhill. Even so, in 2011, Geoffrey Mutai ran the fastest marathon ever at that time, finishing in 2 hours, 3 minutes, and 2 seconds. This was even faster than the official world record at the time!
