List of winners of the Boston Marathon facts for kids
The Boston Marathon is a super famous long-distance running race. It's about 26.2-mile (42.2 km) long. This race happens every year in the Greater Boston area of Massachusetts. It started way back in 1897, making it the oldest yearly marathon in the world!
The Boston Marathon is one of the six biggest marathons globally, called the World Marathon Majors. It's always held on Patriots' Day. This special holiday is usually the third Monday in April. The race was canceled only twice. Once in 1918 because of World War I, and again in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
When the first Boston Marathon happened, only 15 men ran. John McDermott was the first winner. Over the years, the race course changed a bit in length until 1957. This means some older "course records" might seem slower than later ones, even if they were amazing for their time!
Many different countries have had winners in the Boston Marathon. American men have won the most times, with 43 victories. Kenyan men are second with 26 wins, and Canadians have won 16 times. For women, Kenyan runners have won 17 races, Americans 16 times, and Ethiopians 8 times.
Some athletes have won many times. Clarence DeMar won the men's race seven times, which is more than any other runner. His first win was in 1911, and his last was in 1930.
Women were not officially allowed to run until 1972. But some brave women ran unofficially starting in 1966, even though it was against the rules back then. The first six unofficial wins by women, from 1966 to 1971, were officially recognized in 1996. Bobbi Gibb was the first woman to finish the race in 1966. Nina Kuscsik was the first official female winner in 1972. Catherine Ndereba has won the women's race four times, more than any other woman.
The Boston Marathon was also the first big marathon to have a wheelchair division. This started in 1975. Robert Hall won the first official wheelchair race. However, the first person to finish in a wheelchair was Eugene Roberts in 1970. The first female wheelchair finisher was Sharon Rahn in 1977.
Ernst van Dyk is a super successful athlete. He has won the men's wheelchair division 10 times! This is more than anyone else in any division at Boston. Jean Driscoll leads the women's wheelchair division with seven wins. She also holds the record for the most wins in a row, with seven consecutive victories.
A handcyclist division was added in 2017. Handcyclists had raced before, but 2017 was the first time it was an official category. Tom Davis won the first three men's handcyclist races and still holds the course record. Alicia Dana has won the women's handcycle race three times, setting a new course record each time she won.
The Boston Marathon course was designed to be like the original marathon in Greece. It's a hilly race that goes from one point to another, not in a loop. Because of this, it hasn't been the place for many world records.
Suh Yun-bok set the only men's world record officially recognized by World Athletics at Boston in 1947. His time was 2:25:39. Some other fast times were set later, but the course was found to be too short. In 1975, Liane Winter set a women's world record of 2:42:24. Eight years later, Joan Benoit broke another world record, finishing in 2:22:43.
Since 1990, the Boston Marathon has not been eligible for official world records. This is because the start and finish lines are too far apart. Also, the race is mostly downhill, which can make times faster. Even so, in 2011, Geoffrey Mutai ran the race in 2:03:02. This was the fastest marathon time ever recorded at that point, even faster than the official world record!
Current course records are held by Geoffrey Mutai (men), Sharon Lokedi (women), Marcel Hug (men's wheelchair), and Manuela Schär (women's wheelchair).
