Early Days and Founding

The land where Newfield now stands was bought a long time ago. In 1668, a Native American chief named Sunday sold a large area to Francis Small. The price included blankets, rum, gunpowder, musket balls, and beads.

The area was first settled in 1778. It was called Washington Plantation back then. Many of the first settlers were soldiers from the Revolutionary War. Newfield officially became a town on February 25, 1794. By 1859, about 1,418 people lived there.

Life and Work in the Past

The Little Ossipee River flows through Newfield. This river was very important in the past. Its water power helped run many mills. There were mills for grinding grain (gristmills) and cutting wood (lumber mills). People also made barrels and other wood products.

There was even an attempt to mine for silver and iron in the area. However, it was not successful. By 1880, the town's population had decreased to 995 people.

In 1947, Newfield was badly damaged by a series of large fires. These fires affected many parts of Maine.

Willowbrook Museum Village

In 1965, a man named Don King bought an old farm in Newfield. He started collecting old farm tools, carriages, and sleighs. This collection grew into the Willowbrook Museum Village. It became a place where visitors could see what a 19th-century village looked like. Today, it is a popular place for tourists to visit.

Protecting Water Resources

In 2009, Newfield passed a special local law. This law helps stop big companies like Nestlé from taking the town's groundwater. A group of volunteers called POWWR worked hard to make this law happen. They wanted to protect the town's water supply.
