Pokémon the Movie 2000 is a fun Japanese animated movie from 1999. It's also known as Pocket Monsters the Movie: The Phantom Pokémon - Lugia's Explosive Birth in Japan. This adventure film was directed by Kunihiko Yuyama. It is the second movie released in the popular Pokémon series.

The movie has two main parts. First, there's a short story that lasts about 20 minutes. After that, the main movie begins. The story happens during the second season of the TV show, Pokémon: Adventures in the Orange Islands. In the movie, Ash, Misty, and Tracey visit Shamouti Island. There, they find three special legendary bird Pokémon: Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. But a collector named Lawrence III tries to catch these Pokémon. He wants to awaken the powerful Lugia, which could be very dangerous for everyone, including Ash!

Pokémon the Movie 2000 first came out in Japan on July 17, 1999. It was released by Toho. The English version came out in the United States on July 21, 2000, thanks to Warner Bros.. The movie made a lot of money, even though it earned less than the first Pokémon movie, Pokémon: The First Movie.

Plot

Pikachu's Rescue Adventure

This short story focuses on the Pokémon without showing their human trainers. Togepi wakes up and sees some Ledian flying by. It yawns and rolls down a hill into a dark hole. Pikachu, Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Marill, Venonat, and Psyduck chase after it. They end up in a huge tree that used to be Pikachu's home.

With help from Pikachu's new friend, Elekid, the Pokémon find Togepi. But Togepi has been mistaken for an Exeggcute egg! The Pokémon go deeper into the tree to find the real missing egg. Along the way, they meet three Bellossom who are dancing. A big storm hits the area, and Pikachu and his friends try to protect the Exeggcute eggs from blowing away. Other Grass-type Pokémon help out, and Snorlax saves everyone with its strength.

The storm stops when a Dragonair appears and calms the weather. Then, a Chansey shows up, revealing she had the missing egg all along. The eggs are reunited, and Exeggcute evolves into Exeggutor with a Leaf Stone. Pikachu and his friends say goodbye to Elekid and head back to their trainers. Meanwhile, Meowth tries to find his way to a campsite but gets caught in all the Pokémon's adventures.

The Power of One

Lawrence III is a Pokémon collector who wants to make an old legend come true. He plans to catch the legendary birds Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. This will help him capture the "Beast of the Sea," Lugia. Lawrence flies his hovercraft to the Orange Islands to catch these three birds, known as the Titans of Fire, Ice, and Lightning.

He successfully catches Moltres, but this makes the world's weather go crazy. Storms start happening everywhere, and many Pokémon notice the change. Ash Ketchum and his friends Misty and Tracey Sketchit get caught in a storm. They wash ashore on Shamouti Island, which is in the middle of the Orange Islands.

Ash is chosen as the "Chosen One" for the island's festival by a girl named Melody. At a special dinner, Melody tells Ash he must collect three crystal balls. Each ball is from one of the legendary bird's islands. He needs to bring them to Shamouti's shrine, which is guarded by a talking Slowking. Melody will then play the festival's song, which is actually Lugia's song.

Ash immediately sets off, with Pikachu by his side. A sea captain named Maren takes them to Fire Island. Ash and Pikachu find Moltres's treasure, but Team Rocket interrupts them. Misty, Tracey, and Melody arrive on Melody's boat. Then, Zapdos shows up to claim the island. Pikachu and Zapdos talk to each other with electric shocks, and Meowth helps translate.

Lawrence appears and captures Zapdos, accidentally catching Ash and his friends too. Meanwhile, Professor Oak, Professor Ivy, and Ash's mother Delia Ketchum fly to the islands, but their helicopter crashes on Shamouti. Lawrence lets Ash and the others go. He tries to catch Articuno, but this accidentally wakes up Lugia.

Ash and his friends try to stop Lawrence. They free Moltres and Zapdos, who escape and crash Lawrence's hovercraft. Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres start fighting each other. Ash and his friends escape, getting Zapdos's treasure. A mysterious water spout, which turns out to be Lugia, takes them back to Shamouti.

Lugia tries to stop the battle, but the three birds are too strong together. Lugia tells Ash through thoughts that the legend's Chosen One can stop the weather and the birds. Ash puts the two treasures he has on the shrine, but he still needs the third one. Ash agrees to go to Articuno's island for the last treasure, but the legendary birds block his way.

Team Rocket arrives on a makeshift speedboat. They want to save the world so they can continue being villains! The group races to Articuno's shrine and gets the last treasure. But before they can escape, the legendary birds appear. They destroy the speedboat, and Articuno is knocked out by Moltres and Zapdos. Lugia rescues Ash, Pikachu, and Team Rocket. Team Rocket bravely jumps into the sea, realizing they are slowing Lugia down.

Lawrence tries to catch Lugia, but Lugia uses its powerful Aeroblast attack. This destroys Lawrence's airship and knocks out Moltres and Zapdos before Lugia falls into the sea. Misty and Tracey rescue Ash and Pikachu. They go to Shamouti Island's shrine and place the final treasure with the others. Melody plays Lugia's song, which stops the storms and brings peace back to the legendary birds.

Lugia rises from the sea, bringing with it the true "Beast of the Sea," which is an underwater current that was changing the climate. Later, the birds return to their islands. Lugia thanks Ash and leaves. Delia and the professors arrive. Delia tells Ash to be more careful, and he agrees. Lawrence feels bad about his actions and decides to start his collection again. Team Rocket reaches the island a day later. Slowking tells them that the audience saw their heroic actions. The trio thinks about changing their ways but decides to stay the same.
