Sharmba David Mitchell, born on August 27, 1970, is a former American professional boxer. He competed in boxing from 1988 to 2006. Sharmba was a champion, holding the WBA light welterweight title from 1998 to 2001. He also won the IBF interim light welterweight title in 2004.

Sharmba Mitchell's Boxing Journey

Sharmba Mitchell started his professional boxing career on September 23, 1988. His first fight was in Atlantic City, New Jersey, where he won by knockout in the third round against Eddie Colón.

He had an amazing start, winning 14 fights in a row without any losses. Seven of these wins were by knockout. He beat some tough opponents, including Aristides Acevedo, who had won a bronze medal at the Olympic Games. On March 8, 1990, he faced a famous former world champion, Rafael Limón, and won by a unanimous decision after eight rounds.

Mitchell continued his winning streak, reaching a record of 27 wins and no losses, with 16 knockouts. This included a victory against former world title challenger Miguel Santana. On April 22, 1992, he fought former world champion Rocky Lockridge and won by a unanimous decision after ten rounds.

Sharmba's record grew to 31 wins and no losses. However, in early 1994, he lost two fights in a row. First, he lost to future world champion Leavander Johnson in eight rounds. Then, he lost to future two-time world lightweight champion Stevie Johnston in nine rounds. After these two losses, he didn't lose another fight for the next seven years!

He then won six more fights in a row, including a victory over future world champion Terron Millett. On April 11, 1996, Mitchell fought for the WBC Continental Americas light welterweight title in Dallas, Texas. He won the title by knocking out Gilberto Floes in the second round.

On May 10, 1997, Mitchell defeated Jose Rafael Barboza in Miami, Florida, winning the WBA's Fedelatin belt. After two more wins, he got his first chance to become a world champion.

Becoming a WBA Light Welterweight Champion

On October 10, 1998, Sharmba Mitchell traveled to Paris, France. There, he fought Khalid Rahilou from Morocco. Mitchell won the fight by a unanimous decision after twelve rounds, becoming the WBA light welterweight champion.

He successfully defended his world title four times. His last successful defense was against Felix Flores from Puerto Rico on September 16, 2000, in Las Vegas. Mitchell was knocked down in the first round, but he bravely recovered and won the fight by decision.

First Big Fight Against Kostya Tszyu

After his win against Felix Flores, many boxing fans wanted to see Mitchell fight Kostya Tszyu of Australia. Tszyu was the WBC light welterweight champion, and a fight between them would decide who was the best.

This highly anticipated match happened in Las Vegas on February 3, 2001. The fight ended in a surprising way. Mitchell broke his knee early in the fight and could not continue after the seventh round. Even though he wasn't knocked out in the usual way, this still counted as a knockout loss on his record.

After this, Mitchell fought eight more times and won every single one of those fights. He beat former world champion Vince Phillips and won the IBF super lightweight title against Lovemore N'Dou in Atlantic City. He also defended that title once in Manchester, England. He was also the first person to knock down Ben Tackie.

Rematch with Kostya Tszyu

A rematch with Kostya Tszyu was planned for a long time. However, Tszyu had his own health problems, and the fight was canceled several times. It was first planned for Australia, then for Moscow. The rematch finally took place on November 6, 2004, in Phoenix, Arizona. In this second fight, Mitchell was knocked down four times in the third round before the fight was stopped, and he lost by knockout.

Later Fights and Retirement

On November 19, 2005, Mitchell fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Portland, Oregon. Mayweather knocked Mitchell down in the third round and again in the sixth round, which ended the fight.

Mitchell's last professional fight was against Paul Williams in Reno, Nevada, on August 19, 2006. Mitchell was knocked down in the third round and three more times in the fourth round. The referee stopped the fight because Mitchell was too wobbly to continue. Sharmba Mitchell decided to retire from boxing shortly after this fight.

Sharmba Mitchell ended his professional boxing career with an impressive record of 57 wins and 6 losses. He won 30 of his fights by knockout.
