History of Japan

The Shōwa period (昭和時代, Shōwa jidai), also known as the Shōwa era, was a Japanese era name (年号,, nengō,, lit. "year name") after Taishō and before Heisei. This period started on December 25, 1926 and ended on January 7, 1989. During this time, the emperor was Shōwa-tennō ((昭和天皇), also known as Hirohito (裕仁)

The nengō Shōwa means "Brilliant Harmony"

This was the longest period or era in Japanese new history.
