This show is produced by Neela Tele Films Private Limited. It first aired on 28 July 2008. You can watch new episodes from Monday to Friday on SAB TV. Old episodes also started airing on Sony Pal from 2 November 2015.

The show is based on a popular newspaper column. This column was called Duniya Ne Undha Chashma. It was written by journalist and playwright Taarak Mehta for the Gujarati weekly magazine Chitralekha.

About the Show

What's the Story?

The show takes place in Gokuldham Society. This is a fun neighborhood in Mumbai, India. It has four main buildings: A, B, C, and D Wing. Even though there are 17 apartments, the story mostly follows eight special families. All the people living in Gokuldham Society are like one big, happy family.

Meet the Families

  • Jethalal Champaklal Gada: He owns an electronics shop. He is from Kachchh district, Gujarat. He lives with his wife Daya, his father Champaklal, and his son Tipendra (Tapu). They live in B Wing. Jethalal often gets into funny trouble. He always asks his best friend, Taarak Mehta, for help. He even calls Taarak his personal "Fire Brigade"!
  • Taarak Mehta: He is the narrator of the show. He works for a trading company and writes columns. He is from Gujarat. His wife, Anjali, is a very strict dietician. They also live in B Wing.
  • Krishnan Subramaniam Iyer: He is a scientist from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. His wife, Babita, is from Kolkata, West Bengal. They live in C Wing.
  • Aatmaram Tukaram Bhide: He is the secretary of the society. He is a home tutor from Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. He lives with his wife Madhavi, who runs a business, and their daughter Sonalika (Sonu). They live in A Wing.

  • Pankaj Diwan Sahay (Pinku): He is part of the "Tapu Sena," which is a group of kids. He lives in another building called Gulmohar Apartments.

Friends and Neighbors

There are also other characters who often appear in the show. These include Sundarlal, who is Jethalal's wife Daya's brother. Sundarlal is from Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He often brings his friends Baka and Bhailu along. Abdul runs the shop right outside the society. Reporter Rita Shrivastav works for 'Kal Tak' news. Inspector Chalu Pandey is a police officer. Even the show's creator, Asit Kumarr Modi, sometimes appears!

Jethalal's shop has funny assistants: Natwarlal Prabhashankar Udhaiwala (Natu Kaka) and his nephew Bagheshwar Dadu Udhaiwala (Baagha). They often do things in a funny, wrong way. Baagha also has a fiancée named Bawri Dhondulal Kanpuria.

All the people in Gokuldham Society share a strong bond of friendship and care. They live like one big family. They love celebrating festivals and joining in events together. Even though they live like typical Indian families, the characters often find themselves in funny situations. These everyday problems become super comical!

The unique personalities of each character make the show even funnier. No matter what problem a society member faces, everyone else helps them. At the end of most episodes, Taarak Mehta gives a moral message. This message is for everyone in the show and for the viewers too.
