The All-New Super Friends Hour is an American animated TV show about a team of superheroes. It aired from September 10, 1977, to September 2, 1978, on ABC. The show was made by Hanna-Barbera Productions. It was based on the Justice League and other comic book characters from DC Comics.

What is The All-New Super Friends Hour?

The show Super Friends was very popular in the 1970s. Its success grew even more because of other popular TV shows like Wonder Woman and The Six Million Dollar Man.

When The All-New Super Friends Hour started in 1977, many young people watched it. This made the show a huge success! Because it was so popular, the ABC network decided to create an even more exciting series for the next year.

Meet the Super Friends!

In this version of Super Friends, many famous DC Comic heroes returned to fight for justice. These heroes included Superman, Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman.

They also got help from two new super-teens, The Wonder Twins. These twins could change their shapes and forms. They were always joined by their funny space-monkey, Gleek.

How Each Episode Worked

The All-New Super Friends Hour had 45 short cartoons and 15 regular episodes. Each week, the show followed a special plan.

The first part of every show featured two heroes teaming up for a mini-story. (Batman and Robin counted as one hero for these team-ups.) The second part was a story about the Wonder Twins. Often, teenagers would be doing something they shouldn't, like vandalism. The Wonder Twins would then help them. The teens would usually get into danger because of their actions, and the Twins would save them.

The third part was the main adventure of the week. It featured the whole Super Friends team, including the Wonder Twins. This was a longer story. The fourth and final part of the show had one of the main heroes team up with a special guest star. This guest star would use their unique powers to solve a problem.

Also, between the main parts, there were short clips. These clips showed the Super Friends giving tips on safety, health, and first aid. They also shared magic tricks, craft ideas, and a two-part riddle related to the week's main story.

Where to Watch It Later

The 15 hour-long shows were later cut into half-hour episodes. These shorter episodes were shown on local TV stations in the early 1980s.

Episodes from the 1977 series were also part of The Superman/Batman Adventures. This show aired on the USA Network in 1996. Later, it was shown on Cartoon Network and Boomerang. Boomerang even aired the original hour-long shows from 1977 in 2004 and again in 2008.

Who Was in the Super Friends Team?

Special Guest Heroes

Some villains also appeared in the show. Black Manta showed up in episodes like "The Whirlpool." In the show, he was called "Manta" and his suit was olive brown.

Gentleman Ghost appeared in an episode called "Ghost." He was known as "Gentleman Jim Craddock." In this story, someone used a spell to bring him back to get revenge on Superman and Wonder Woman. He turned people, and even Superman and Wonder Woman, into ghosts! The Super Friends eventually used magical rods to send Gentleman Ghost back to his grave.

Super Friends Today

The 2010 DC Super Friends "The Joker's Playhouse" uses the main theme from The World's Greatest Super Friends. It also shares parts of its opening with The All-New Super Friends Hour. For example, it introduces several Super Friends by name, just like the older show.
