Timo Werner (born on March 6, 1996) is a German professional footballer. He plays as a forward for the English club Tottenham Hotspur. He is currently on loan from the German club RB Leipzig. Timo also plays for the Germany national team.

Werner started his senior club career in 2013 with VfB Stuttgart. He quickly became the club's youngest player to make his debut and score a goal. In 2016, at age 20, he joined RB Leipzig for a record fee of €10 million. At Leipzig, he set records as the youngest player to reach 150 and 200 appearances in the Bundesliga. He was also the second-highest goalscorer in the 2019–20 season.

After becoming Leipzig's all-time top goalscorer, Werner moved to Chelsea in 2020. He won the UEFA Champions League in his first season with Chelsea. In August 2022, he returned to Leipzig.

Timo Werner has also played for the German national team. He scored many goals for Germany's youth teams. He made his senior debut in 2017 and helped Germany win the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup. He won the Golden Boot award for being the top goalscorer in that tournament. He also played for Germany in the 2018 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2020.

Early Life and Youth Career

Timo Werner was born on March 6, 1996, in Stuttgart, Germany. His father, Günther Schuh, was also a footballer.

Timo started playing football at TSV Steinhaldenfeld. In 2002, he joined VfB Stuttgart's youth academy. By the 2012–13 season, he was playing for the U-19 team, even though he was only 16. He scored 24 goals that season. In 2013, he won the Gold U-17 Fritz Walter Medal, which is a special award for young German football players.

Timo Werner made his first professional appearance for Stuttgart in 2013. This was during a UEFA Europa League qualifying match. At 17 years, four months, and 25 days old, he became the youngest player ever to play an official match for Stuttgart. He broke a record that had stood for a long time.

Soon after, he also became Stuttgart's youngest player in the Bundesliga (Germany's top league) and the DFB-Pokal (German Cup). He also became their youngest goalscorer when he scored his first goal against Eintracht Frankfurt. On November 10, he scored two goals in one game against SC Freiburg. This made him the youngest player in Bundesliga history to score two goals in a single match.

On his 18th birthday, Werner signed a professional contract with Stuttgart. He played 95 league games and scored 13 goals for the club. He also became the youngest player to reach 50 Bundesliga appearances. This record was later broken by another player, Kai Havertz. In May 2016, Stuttgart was moved down to a lower league. Because of this, Timo decided to join a new team, RB Leipzig.

Becoming a Star at RB Leipzig

On June 11, 2016, Timo Werner signed a four-year contract with RB Leipzig. The transfer fee was €10 million, which was the most money the club had ever paid for a player at that time. On September 26, 2016, he became the youngest player to play in 100 Bundesliga matches. He was 20 years and 203 days old. He finished the 2016–17 Bundesliga season with 21 goals, making him the top German goalscorer in the league. His goals helped RB Leipzig qualify for the UEFA Champions League for the first time ever.

In March 2018, Werner reached another milestone. He became the youngest player to make 150 Bundesliga appearances. Later that month, he scored the winning goal against Bayern Munich, helping Leipzig beat them for the first time. He scored 13 goals and made seven assists that season.

On October 7, 2018, Timo scored his 50th Bundesliga goal in a huge 6–0 win against 1. FC Nürnberg. This was also RB Leipzig's biggest win in the league. In November, he scored two goals in a 3–0 win against Hertha BSC. By December 16, he had already scored 10 league goals for the season. On January 27, 2019, he played his 100th game for RB Leipzig. On May 4, he became the first player to score 50 Bundesliga goals for the club.

On August 30, 2019, Werner scored his first Bundesliga hat-trick (three goals in one game) in a 3–1 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach. On November 23, he became the youngest player ever to reach 200 Bundesliga appearances. In his last game for Leipzig on June 27, 2020, he scored both goals in a 2–1 win. He left Leipzig as the club's all-time top goalscorer with 95 goals.

On June 18, 2020, Timo Werner agreed to join the Premier League club Chelsea. Chelsea paid £47.5 million for him, and he signed a five-year contract. He officially joined the club on July 1. He made his league debut on September 14 in a 3–1 win against Brighton. On September 29, he scored his first goal for Chelsea in a cup match against Tottenham Hotspur.

On October 17, Werner scored his first two Premier League goals for Chelsea in a 3–3 draw against Southampton. He scored his first Champions League goal for Chelsea on October 28 against Krasnodar.

On May 5, 2021, he scored the first goal in a 2–0 win against Real Madrid. This helped Chelsea reach the Champions League final. On May 29, he won his first-ever Champions League title when Chelsea beat Manchester City in the final in Porto.

Timo started the 2021–22 season by playing in the 2021 UEFA Super Cup match. Chelsea won this match after a penalty shootout. He scored his first goal of that season in a cup game against Aston Villa. On December 8, 2021, Werner scored Chelsea's fastest goal in Champions League history, just 82 seconds into a game against Zenit Saint Petersburg.

Back to RB Leipzig and Loan to Tottenham

On August 9, 2022, Timo Werner returned to RB Leipzig on a four-year contract. The fee was about £25.3 million. On August 13, he played his first game back for Leipzig and scored a goal in a 2–2 draw. On October 1, 2022, he scored two goals against Bochum, reaching 100 and 101 goals for Leipzig in all competitions. This made him the first player to score 100 goals for the club.

In November 2022, Werner got an ankle injury. This meant he could not play for Germany in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. On April 15, 2023, he scored his 100th Bundesliga goal in a 3–2 win against Augsburg.

On January 9, 2024, Werner joined Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on loan. The loan was until the end of the 2023–24 season, with an option for Tottenham to buy him permanently. He made his debut on January 14, helping set up a goal in a 2–2 draw against Manchester United. He scored his first goal for Tottenham on March 2 in a 3–1 win against Crystal Palace. Tottenham later extended his loan for another season.

Timo Werner played for various German youth national teams, including the U15, U16, U17, U19, and U21 teams. He scored 34 goals in 48 matches for these youth teams. In 2010, he scored three goals in his first game for Germany U15.

In 2017, he was called up to the German senior squad. He was chosen for a friendly match against England and a World Cup qualification match.

On May 17, 2017, Werner was picked for Germany's squad for the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. He scored his first two international goals in a group match against Cameroon. Four days later, he scored Germany's third goal in a 4–1 win against Mexico in the semi-final. On July 2, 2017, Werner helped set up the winning goal in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup Final against Chile.
