The men's volleyball tournament at the 2024 Summer Olympics was a big event where teams from all over the world competed. It was the 16th time men's volleyball was played at the Summer Olympics. The games took place in Paris, France, from July 27 to August 10, 2024.

For the first time ever in Olympic volleyball, each team could bring one extra player. This player was called an "AP athlete" and could replace another player if someone got injured or sick.

France won the gold medal for the second time in a row! They beat Poland in the final match (3–0). The United States won the bronze medal by defeating Italy (3–0).

How the Tournament Worked

The men's volleyball tournament had 12 teams competing. The games were held at the South Paris Arena.

How Teams Qualified

Teams earned their spot in the Olympics through different qualification events held before the games. This ensured that only the best teams from around the world got to compete.

Tournament Rules

The tournament had a new way of playing compared to past Olympics.

  • Preliminary Round: The 12 teams were split into three groups, with four teams in each group. Each team played every other team in their group once. This is called a round-robin format.
  • Advancing to Knockout Stage: The top two teams from each group moved on to the next stage. The two best third-placed teams also got to advance. This made it exciting because more teams had a chance to continue!
  • Knockout Stage: After the preliminary round, the tournament became a single-elimination style. This means if a team lost a match, they were out of the competition.
    • Quarterfinals: The top 8 teams played against each other.
    • Semifinals: The winners of the quarterfinals moved on to the semifinals.
    • Medal Matches: The teams that lost in the semifinals played for the bronze medal. The winners of the semifinals played for the gold medal.

Team Grouping (The Draw)

The 12 qualified teams were placed into groups based on their FIVB World Ranking from June 24, 2024. Since France was the host country, they were automatically placed first in Pool A. The next two highest-ranked teams were placed at the top of Pools B and C. The remaining teams were then drawn into the groups.

How Teams Were Ranked

To decide the order of teams after the group stage, these rules were followed:

  • Most matches won.
  • Most match points (3 points for 3-0 or 3-1 win, 2 points for 3-2 win).
  • Better sets ratio (total sets won divided by total sets lost).
  • Better points ratio (total points won divided by total points lost).
  • Result of the last match between tied teams.

To decide which teams played each other in the quarterfinals, a combined ranking system was used, looking at:

  • Their position in their group.
  • Number of matches won.
  • Match points.
  • Sets ratio.
  • Points ratio.
  • Head-to-head results (who beat whom).
  • World ranking.
