FIVB Road to Paris Volleyball Qualifier
← Previous

The 2023 FIVB Volleyball Women's Olympic Qualification Tournaments were three big volleyball events. In these tournaments, 24 national women's teams from around the world competed. The main goal was for the top two teams from each tournament to win a spot in the 2024 Summer Olympics! One of the tournaments, held in Japan, was also called the 2023 Volleyball Women's World Cup. These events were also known as the FIVB Road to Paris Volleyball Qualifier.

Choosing the Host Countries

On October 16, 2022, the FIVB (the international volleyball federation) announced that Japan would host one of the tournaments for both men's and women's teams. The tournaments in Japan were also called the World Cup Japan 2023. Later, on March 8, 2023, the FIVB confirmed that China and Poland would host the other two women's tournaments. China also hosted a men's tournament.

How Teams Qualified

To play in these Olympic Qualification Tournaments, teams had to be among the best in the FIVB World Rankings. The 24 highest-ranked teams that hadn't already qualified for the Olympics were invited. Russia's team was not able to compete in these tournaments.

How Teams Were Grouped (Pools)

The 24 teams were divided into three groups, called "pools," with eight teams in each. The three host countries (China, Japan, and Poland) were placed in different pools based on their world ranking. The highest-ranked host went to Pool A, the middle-ranked to Pool B, and the lowest-ranked to Pool C. The other 21 teams were then sorted into groups based on their FIVB Women's World Rankings from January 1, 2023. A special drawing ceremony was held in Lausanne, Switzerland, on March 17, 2023, to decide which teams went into which pool.

How Teams Were Ranked

Teams in each pool were ranked based on these rules:

  • The team with the most wins (matches won) was ranked highest.
  • If teams had the same number of wins, points were used:

* Winning 3–0 or 3–1 gave 3 points to the winner and 0 to the loser. * Winning 3–2 gave 2 points to the winner and 1 point to the loser.

  • If teams were still tied, they looked at the "set quotient." This means dividing the total sets won by the total sets lost. The higher the number, the better.
  • If still tied, they looked at the "points quotient." This means dividing the total points scored by the total points lost. The higher the number, the better.
  • If teams were still tied, the team that won the head-to-head match between them was ranked higher.
