Anthony Parnther is an American conductor, bassoon player, and teacher. He is very well known for his work leading orchestras for popular movies and video games. He helps bring the music in your favorite films to life!

Since 2019, he has been the music director for the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra in San Bernardino, California. He also leads the Southeast Symphony in Los Angeles, California, a role he has had since 2010.

Early Life and Family

Anthony Parnther was born in Norfolk, Virginia. His mom, Samalaulu, was an economist and professor. His dad, George, was an engineer.

George Parnther came to the United States from Kingston, Jamaica, around 1949. He joined the U.S. Navy and served in the Korean War. Later, he studied engineering and mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Samalaulu came from Samoa in 1960. She studied economics at Columbia University. The Parnther family settled in Norfolk, Virginia, in the late 1960s.

Anthony went to E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg, Virginia. There, he played the cello, bassoon, and tuba in the school's music groups.

Education and Training

Anthony Parnther studied conducting at Yale University. He also studied music performance at Northwestern University.

At Yale, he learned conducting from famous teachers like Lawrence Leighton Smith and Otto Werner Mueller.

Music Career

In May 2019, the San Bernardino Symphony chose Anthony Parnther as their Music Director. This happened after a two-year search for the right person.

He also works as the conductor for the Southeast Symphony in Los Angeles, California. Before this, he conducted the Orange County Symphony and the Inland Valley Symphony.

Anthony Parnther is a well-known conductor, music arranger, and bassoon player. He works with the Hollywood Studio Symphony. This group plays music for TV shows, movies, and video games.

Guest Conducting

Anthony has led many top orchestras across North America. These include the New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and Los Angeles Philharmonic. He has also conducted the Philadelphia Orchestra and The Cleveland Orchestra.

In 2018, Parnther conducted Chineke! at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. He led them again in September 2023 at the BBC Proms.

From 2004 to 2007, Anthony taught at East Tennessee State University. He directed the Symphonic Band and the Marching Buccaneers. He also led the Men and Women's Basketball Pep Bands.

From 2008 to 2010, he taught double reed instruments at Fullerton College. He was also a director for a music program at University of California, Berkeley from 2010 to 2015. From 2015 to 2017, he was an Artist-in-residence at the Oakwood School in North Hollywood.
