When Dami was nine, she moved to Australia with her mother and younger brother, Kenny. Her parents believed Australia offered more opportunities. They lived with their uncle in Brisbane while her father stayed in South Korea to support them. Now, her parents live together, splitting their time between Australia and South Korea.

When she was 11, Dami began studying piano at the Young Conservatorium of Music at Griffith University. She won several piano competitions and scholarships.
