History of FK Zeta
Early Years (1927-1997)
The club started in 1927. Back then, it was called FK Danica. For many years, they only played friendly games. They didn't play in official leagues. In 1945, the club changed its name to FK Napredak. Then, in 1955, it became FK Zeta, which is its name today.
Until the 1970s, FK Zeta played in the lowest football divisions. Their first big success came in the 1971–72 season. They were promoted to the Montenegrin Republic League. This was the third-highest league in SFR Yugoslavia. FK Zeta spent most of the next 20 years in this league. They finished second four times, but couldn't get promoted to the Yugoslav Second League. In 1982–83, a game between FK Berane and FK Zeta had 10,000 fans. This was a record for the Montenegrin Republic League.
Rise to the Top (1997-2006)
A very successful time for FK Zeta began in the 1997–98 season. The team won their first championship in the Montenegrin Republic League. This win helped them get promoted to the Yugoslav Second League. In their first season there (1998–99), FK Zeta finished fourth. But the biggest success came in the 1999–2000 season. After a tough fight, they won the league title. This meant they were promoted to the First Yugoslav League. This was the top league!
FK Zeta played their first game in the First League on August 12, 2000. They won 4-0 against Milicionar at their home stadium, Trešnica. About 5,000 fans watched this historic game. FK Zeta stayed in the top Yugoslav League for six seasons. They often finished in the top half of the league table. When FK Zeta joined the First League, a new local rivalry started. They played against Budućnost from nearby Podgorica.
Zeta had many great results in the First League. They often beat strong teams like Partizan and Red Star. FK Zeta became the strongest Montenegrin team in the First League during most of these years (2000–2006).
Their best finish in the top league of Serbia and Montenegro was in the 2004–05 season. They came in third place. This allowed them to play in European competitions for the first time. In their first European game, they lost in the 2005–06 UEFA Cup to Bosnian team Široki Brijeg.
During this time, Zeta also helped develop many talented young players. Some famous players who started here include Miloš Marić, who moved to Greek club Olympiacos. Also, brothers Bojan and Nenad Brnović, and Branimir Petrović all joined Partizan. Later, Milanko Rašković and Nikola Trajković moved to Red Star Belgrade.
Recent Years (2006-present)
After Montenegro became independent in 2006, FK Zeta played in the first Montenegrin First League season. They won the league that year (2006–07). This made them the first-ever champions of the new league. The next season, Montenegrin clubs got their own spots in European competitions. Zeta became the first Montenegrin club to play in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers. FK Zeta has not won the Montenegrin First League since 2007. However, they have played in European competitions several times by finishing in the top four.
In the 2012–13 season, Zeta made history again. They became the first Montenegrin club to get past two rounds of European qualifiers in one season. They even got past the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League. They beat FK Sarajevo from Bosnia and Herzegovina. They then lost in the play-off round to PSV Eindhoven. This is still the best performance by a Montenegrin club in a European competition.
