Club History and Achievements
Early Years: 1927 to 1997
The club started in 1927 as FK Danica. For many years, they only played friendly matches. In 1947, the club changed its name to FK Napredak. Since 1955, the team has been known as FK Zeta.
Until the 1970s, FK Zeta played in lower-level competitions. Their first big success came in the 1971–72 season. They were promoted to the Montenegrin Republic League. This was the third-highest league in SFR Yugoslavia. FK Zeta spent most of the next 20 years in this league. They finished second four times, but could not get promoted to the Yugoslav Second League. A record 10,000 fans watched a game between FK Berane and FK Zeta in 1983.
Rising Through the Ranks: 1997 to 2006
A very successful time for FK Zeta began in the 1997–98 season. They won their first championship title in the Montenegrin Republic League. This win helped them get promoted to the Yugoslav Second League.
In their first season in the Second League (1998–99), FK Zeta finished fourth. But the biggest success came in the 1999–2000 season. After a tough fight, the team from Golubovci won the league title. This meant they were promoted to the First Yugoslav League.
FK Zeta played their first game in the First League on August 12, 2000. They won 4-0 against Milicionar in Golubovci. About 5,000 fans watched this historic game at Trešnica stadium. FK Zeta played in the Yugoslav First League for six years in a row. They often finished in the top half of the league table. When FK Zeta joined the First League, a new local rivalry began. They played against Budućnost from nearby Podgorica.
Zeta had many great results in the First League. They often beat strong teams like Partizan and Red Star. FK Zeta became the strongest Montenegrin team in the First League during most of these years.
Their highest finish in the top league of Serbia and Montenegro was in the 2004–05 season. They came in third place. This allowed them to play in European competitions for the first time. In their first European game, they lost to the Bosnian team Široki Brijeg in the 2005–06 UEFA Cup.
During this time, Zeta also helped develop many talented young players. Some of these players moved to big clubs. For example, Miloš Marić went to Olympiacos in Greece. Brothers Bojan and Nenad Brnović, and Branimir Petrović joined Partizan. Later, Milanko Rašković and Nikola Trajković moved to Red Star Belgrade.
Modern Era: 2006 to Present
After Montenegro became independent in 2006, FK Zeta played in the first Montenegrin First League season (2006–07). They became the very first champions of this new league. The next season, Montenegrin clubs got their own spots in European competitions. Zeta was the first Montenegrin club to play in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.
FK Zeta has not won the Montenegrin First League since their 2006–07 victory. However, they have played in European competitions many times. They earned these spots by finishing in the top four of their league.
In the 2012–13 season, Zeta made history again. They became the first Montenegrin club to get past two rounds of European qualifiers in one season. They even made it past the third qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League. They beat FK Sarajevo from Bosnia and Herzegovina. They then lost in the play-off round to PSV Eindhoven. This is still the best performance by a Montenegrin club in a European competition.
FK Zeta in European Competitions
FK Zeta first played in European competitions in the 2005–06 season. They have played in European cups for ten seasons in total. Their best performance was in the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League, when they reached the play-off round.
