Behind the Scenes: Making Season 7
The Creative Team
The creators and executive producers of the series, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, were the main leaders for the seventh season. They are known as the showrunners. The directors for this season included Jeremy Podeswa, Mark Mylod, Matt Shakman, and Alan Taylor. Alan Taylor returned to direct after being away since the second season. Matt Shakman directed for the first time on Game of Thrones. Michele Clapton also came back as the costume designer.
Writing the Story
The seventh season told new stories that were not yet in the A Song of Ice and Fire book series. The show's writers worked closely with author George R. R. Martin. He shared details about how the story would end, which helped shape the TV series.
Filming Locations and Schedule
Filming for Season 7 started on August 31, 2016, in Belfast, at Titanic Studios. It finished in February 2017. The showrunners explained that filming began later than usual. This was because the story had reached "winter," meaning they needed grim, gray weather. Sunny locations would not work for the snowy scenes.
The city of Girona, Spain, which was used before, was not a filming location this season. Instead, the seventh season was filmed in Northern Ireland, Spain, and Iceland. Filming in Northern Ireland started in August 2016. In Spain, they filmed in cities like Seville, Cáceres, Almodóvar del Río, Santiponce, Zumaia, and Bermeo. Specific Spanish spots included Muriola Beach in Barrika and the Royal Dockyards of Seville. The shores of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe were also used.
The show returned to film at The Dark Hedges in Stranocum, Northern Ireland. This spot was used as the Kingsroad in the second season. Some scenes were also filmed in Iceland. Dubrovnik, Croatia, which is known as King's Landing in the show, was another filming location. A special scene where Arya reunited with her direwolf, Nymeria, was filmed in Alberta, Canada.
New and Returning Actors
The five main actors, Peter Dinklage, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, and Kit Harington, had new contracts for the final two seasons. Their salaries increased for the seventh and eighth seasons.
On August 31, 2016, it was announced that Jim Broadbent joined the cast in an important role. The character of Dickon Tarly was also recast. Tom Hopper took over the role from Freddie Stroma. Several familiar faces returned for Season 7. These included Mark Gatiss as Tycho Nestoris, Ben Hawkey as Hot Pie, and Joe Dempsie as Gendry.
Some famous musicians also made cameo appearances. Members of the British indie pop band Bastille filmed small roles. British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran also had a cameo. Brent Hinds, the frontman of the American heavy metal band Mastodon, also appeared. This was his second cameo in the series. Even New York Mets baseball pitcher Noah Syndergaard had a background cameo as a Lannister soldier.
Episode Details
On April 21, 2016, HBO officially ordered the seventh season. The creators, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, decided the season would have fewer episodes. They explained that making 10 episodes in the usual time frame was too difficult. They said it was more like making a movie than a TV show.
HBO confirmed on July 18, 2016, that Season 7 would have seven episodes. It would also premiere later in mid-2017 because of the delayed filming schedule. The season officially debuted on July 16, 2017. The final episode of Season 7 was 81 minutes long. This made it the longest episode in the series at that time. The second to last episode was also longer than average, at 71 minutes. Most of the first five episodes were also longer than the usual 55 minutes.
