The fifth generation iPod Touch (also called iPod touch, iPod Touch 5, or iPod Touch 5G) is a small computer you can carry in your pocket. It was made by Apple Inc. and came after the fourth generation iPod Touch.
Just like the iPhone 5, this iPod Touch is thinner and lighter. It also has a bigger 4-inch screen. Some cool new things it could do were recording videos in 1080p (super clear!), taking wide panoramic pictures, and using an LED flash for better photos. It also had a powerful Apple A5 processor and the voice assistant Siri.
The fifth generation iPod Touch came in many fun colors. You could get it in space grey, silver, pink, yellow, blue, and a special Product Red version. Apple announced this iPod Touch on September 12, 2012, at the same time as the iPhone 5. It was then released to buy on October 11, 2012.
When it first came out, you could only buy it with 32 or 64 gigabytes (GB) of storage. A 16 GB model was added later on May 30, 2013. This first 16 GB version was only available in one color and didn't have a back camera or the special iPod Touch loop. A newer 16 GB model was released on June 26, 2014. This one did have the back camera and more color choices. On that same day, the prices for all iPod Touch models became lower.
Cool Features of the iPod Touch 5G
What Software Does it Use?
The fifth generation iPod Touch runs on Apple's mobile operating system called iOS. When it was first sold, it came with iOS 6, which was released on September 19, 2012. With this device, you can play music, watch movies and TV shows, read eBooks, listen to audiobooks, and enjoy podcasts.
This iPod Touch was the first one to have Siri, Apple's voice assistant. Siri was also on the iPhone 4S and newer iPhones. With iOS 6, Siri got even better! You could ask it to open apps, find movie reviews, check sports scores, and even update your Facebook or Twitter status.
The iPod Touch also supports iMessage. This is a free messaging service that lets you send unlimited messages to other Apple devices that use iOS 5 or newer.
Some other apps and features that came with iOS 6 included Apple Maps, Passbook, and screen mirroring. Screen mirroring means you could show what was on your iPod Touch screen on a television. The new Apple Maps app replaced Google Maps. It didn't have all the features of other map apps and sometimes gave wrong directions. The Passbook app was useful for storing things like boarding passes, tickets, coupons, and other cards. You could scan your device with Passbook at a barcode reader to buy things.
A feature called AirPlay was also available. This allowed you to show your iPod Touch screen on an Apple TV or other compatible device. The fifth generation iPod Touch was the first iPod Touch to support AirPlay.
The fifth generation iPod Touch later supported iOS 7, which came out on September 18, 2013. It was the only iPod Touch model that could run iOS 7 at the time. Apple announced on June 2, 2014, that this iPod Touch would also support iOS 8 when it was released in the fall.
Design and Look
The fifth generation iPod Touch has a body made from aluminum. This is the same strong and light aluminum used to make MacBook computers.
Besides having an iSight camera and an LED flash, the fifth generation iPod Touch had a cool new feature called the "iPod touch loop." There's a small button on the bottom left side of the back of the iPod Touch. You can press this button and attach a wrist strap, or "loop," to it. This helps you keep your iPod safe and prevents you from dropping it!
